@RMB-PM: I ordered an Element 970 and I want to upgrade some of its components with stuff I have. Is it possible to run a 27.2 seatpost with a shim and retain the factory warranty? What type of front der is used? Is it the S3 version?

Thanks a lot.

No problem on the shimmed post, if there is 100mm insertion.

Uses an S3 LDM Sram FD: you mount it WITHOUT the FD plate included, just washers.

RMB-PM: the mtbr preview from LeeL mentions dropper post guides. Are these guides located on the driveside or non-drive side? Again, is 100m insertion adequate on the larger sizes if the post doesn't insert all the way below the toptube? Sorry for all the Q's, but this will help pick the right Reverb.

Hi,

Guides are on non driveside, and 100mm is adequate.

Cheers!

does anyone know the difference in weight for smaller frames? i'm looking at a 17" 950. i was hoping that 3-4 thou would get me in under 27#.

side note... i've heard that they will have a carbon frame for next year. another thou, another pound.

looking at the spearfish website, that one varies by .2-.3 lbs between sizes. probably similar variance here....

A carbon Element 29er is only a rumor, no announcements were made. But then again, the 29er Altitude didn't come in carbon in it's second year, so maybe there won't be any carbon 29ers next year. You never know.

As for the weight, you can easily drop a lot of ounces by swapping out the wheelset. I think you can easily gain a pound there.

Why the move away from Fox shock and fork for the 970?

Fox can't touch RS weights, and I wanted to make sure it was a balanced feel to the suspension.

As in RS allowed you to have more input to the design/development?

Well, we custom tune all our rear shocks, so in that sense, yes, RS allowed us input. But my point was this:

RS SID 29 forks are waaay lighter than F29's. And in the rear, I find if you mate a Float shock to a SID fork, you usually get this weird unbalanced feel: I always feel like they ride better when mated to a Monarch shock, then you seem to get a more similar feel front to back.

I've noticed that about their suspension too. It is kind of weird, but SRAM's gear is great and really, really light too. So, you can't go wrong with what is being spec'd for suspension on the 950.

Fox can't touch their own spec weights. The 15mm QR and tapered Fox forks I've bought in the past two years have all been heavier than spec weight. There still may be a SID WC tapered fork in the future for my Element 70 MSL.

Since you got RS to custom make the fork for you any thoughts on having just 2 heights like a TALAS, full up and full down to aid on the fly switching? Dialing several rotations from 100mm to 120mm and then back down to 100mm at the bottom of the descent kinda ruins the flow.

Biggest drag on my RS Reba Uturn... Twist-twist-twist... Would be nice to have a hyd switch for high and low. When you unweighted the fork it resets the travel.

convert stock wheelset to tubeless?

Has anyone had luck converting the stock 950 wheelset to tubeless? I am having a balls of a time getting the front tire to seat with just tape. I would much prefer to not have to use a rim strip. I was able to get the rear inflated (stan's tape/valve, Slime Pro sealant) and had one short/easy ride on it but am getting mucho leakage. This is my first venture into tubeless so maybe it is just typical trial/error that I have to go through, but any tips would be appreciated.

LOVING the bike otherwise tho.

Is there a general sizing guide? I am 6' 3" and don't know if the 21.5" would be too big.
