    Little Devil: Season Ending Injury

Today, my son Pepe aka Little Devil (8 y/o) suffered a spiral fracture of his right tibia (spelling?) bone while enjoying summer camp activities. He'll be on a leg long cast for 4 weeks and then 4 additional weeks with a knee high cast for a total of 8 non productive weeks.

That really sucks for him, in 2 weeks he had his birthday coming up and he was really exited. He's getting a road bike and was looking to picking up the bike and having a bike fitting on his birthday. He'll still get the bike but the fitting will have to wait at least until the big cast is removed.

Also his XC season and summer camp also ended due to the injury. He recently got a sponsorship from a LBS and now his season is over. I feel so sorry for him but what can I do

On a positive note the doctors said that the injury should heal nice and that non growing part of his leg was affected, that gave us a breather because we were really worried.

    Got tibia right, missed "spiral"

Too bad about Little D, tough to be grounded with an injury like that, especially at his age. Broke my tib once, it healed up fine.

I checked out your gallery, the two crash pics are awesome!

This is really sucking up big time, he's having a hard time just laying down.

Any suggestions for a cast tatoo? Maybe that will make him feel a bit better.

Hey..before you know it, he will be hopping around the place on that cast and poking things down it to scratch the elusive 'itch' under the plaster..

    Been there, done that..

The first week or two is the worst, but kids have amazing healing properties.

Sorry to see it happen, but he will be fine.

Say 'hello' to him from me, and tell him that I hope he gets better soon.

Man sorry to hear this, after checking the "kids" thread I was most impressed w/ Lil D and most all of those kids. I'm sure glad I never had any broken bones in my entire life, busted my skull a couple times as a kid but never a limb. Closet thing I had happen to me was chicken-pox which kept me in bed for an entire summer and drove me almost insane.

As for a cast tatoo I'd say the cleat idea although cool would put a bit to much of a tease on your son, maybe a chainring or his team logo(s). Hope he keeps his sponsorship. BTW that looks like w wicked alful crash from the pics. Hope he heals fast, but more importantly heals properly and fully.
One day your life will flash before your eyes, will it be worth watching??

    Ice bag?

Hope the need for that wasn't too bad!

Pretty soon he'll be up & around, on the skateboard in the house, looking for some gardening shears to cut the cast off early. Not that I've ever been there.......

    Heal well there little D.

    Bummer!

Sorry to hear about your son's involuntary rest session. I hope that he heals quickly.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas.
