Bonking ... not feelin' well Fractured Sternum, fractured skull, mid-lumbar spinal cord injury, one crash.

We were hoping to have an easy, fun Memorial Day ride yesterday when a fellow rider went down HARD. He endo'd trying to get over a downed tree, just didn't have enough speed to clear it correctly. He went down with his hands still on the bars, helmet making contact with the ground first. His helmet visor acted like a shovel, pulling his chin and chin guard down into his chest, breaking his sternum, and fracturing his skull in the forehead area. He lost feeling in his legs from the waist down almost immediately, with mid-lumbar spinal trauma also being present. He was air lifted to a local hospital where they weren't sure if he would be able to walk again at that point. Thankfully, he began to regain feeling in his legs this morning, but a lot of question marks are still present. It takes a while to process what's happened when everything's great all morning, only to see a friend go down in such a bad way like that. Please keep Derrick in your thoughts/prayers/ what ever way you feel fit.

Thanks to all for the kind comments, I'll relay them to him when he gets out. His back surgery was successful. Next week, they have to repair his skull and nose concerns.

Ooh boy, let him know we're thinking about him. I think that we are all only millimeters from a fall like this in this sport we love. It doesn't matter how skilled we THINK we are, there's no beating the mountain. Speedy recovery indeed!
