Nov 13, I went over the bars, landed shoulder down, and broke my right humerus up near the top (right below where it bends downward toward the elbow. I fortunately did not require surgery, and things are healing up nicely. I got lucky, as far as these things can go.
The doctor has been quoting 6 - 8 weeks for the bone to heal, but I'm having a harder time getting a solid idea of how long after that my arm/shoulder will be able to withstand the rigors of mountain biking.
The doctor has me hanging my arm down and gently swinging my hand in a circle just to keep my shoulder a little loose. All in all, things have gone better than I expected, but I know it is a slow process.
Anyone ever had a similar injury? I'm thinking it'll probably be March or so, maybe even April, before I'll be back riding, but I'm hoping for better than that.
In the meantime, I'm dusting off my hiking gear, and when the bone gets healed, I'm going to be pounding the trails to get back in shape.
I broke mine 2 years ago....but mine was up by the shoulder joint at the attachment of the rotator cuff and I had surgery for plate and screws.
I had to wait 3.5 weeks from surgery to start passive PT for 2.4 weeks then begin strength training PT.
I started riding the 2nd week that I was cleared for strength training PT. Just light easy trails for about 4 weeks, them got progressively more aggressive.....but like I said above, I was screwed back together.
I crashed hard enough on my Tallboy to break my leg,
The carbon is way more durable than most people.
Just broke mine (distal = as close to end towards the elbow as you can get) on December 1. Had surgery on the 4th. 5 screws. + a screw and wire where he had to break my ulna to repair my humerus. No expected recovery time yet. Working on range of motion now. My hopes are to be back on the bike this spring
If anyone has had and injury such as this please feel free to provide me any info, advice, or encouragement.
I had a clean break at the shoulder of my humerus and was on my bike the next day, lol! I don't recommend that. I was doing light road riding by week 4 and trail riding at week 6 but didn't push it until into the 7th week. Generally need 8 weeks for the bone to fully heal. Was also told my bone is stronger now so go BIGGER next time!
