Back Pain while riding, especially on climbs?

Okay, so I haven't been riding as much. Lately when I do ride, on extended climbs my back starts hurting, muscle spasms it seems. Afterwards the pain persists but does go down somewhat after about 1-2 days.

I've not had this before, the bikes have not changed in terms of setup, geo, or components, seat angles, bars. All same as before I had pain.

Oh wait. One thing has changed is my gearing. I've gone from a 22T granny to a 26T or even just the 36T. I just realized, perhaps having to push the larger gears, could that be causing my pain?

Hmm. Anyone with this experience as well shed some light?

if you can, seek medical opinion.
try not to self diagnose if you can,
at the very least get a second opinion

I agree with Zarr. Seek professional medical opinion. I have degerative arthritis in my lower back and riding releives the pain. My doctors say it is normal for cycling to do this and just enjoy.
