Nasty OTB bail led to a small full thickness tear in the anterior aspect of the labrum. Good news is it doesn't hurt to MTB! Bad news is at 44y/o there seems to be no clear answer as to whether surgical repair is worth it or not.
I have had three hip arthroscopies to repair torn labrums. None of them completely cured the symptoms, but they did improve the situation. The third (revision) surgery found that my symptoms had returned because I had literally managed to tear apart the stitches that repaired my labrum during the prior arthroscopy. I don't check these boards very often, but you can PM me if you have any questions I could help with.
Yay. I'm in the three hip arthroscopy surgery, too.
Mine started with a right hip labrum tear. Went for the revision aka labrum shave. Very mellow surgery -- I've had both ACLs replaced and broken femur, etc. and the labrum is a very quick recovery.
The problem for me was this: my first surgeon made the wrong diagnosis. My hip problem wasn't simply due to impacts/twisting etc. It was because of a bad fit between head of femur and pelvis. Known as FAI syndrome -- femoral acetabular impingement, I believe.
Started having pain again very quickly. Eventually went to another doc. By that time 50% of the cartilage in my hip was gone. In surgery doc popped the leg out, used a rotary saw to reshape the top of the femur -- the ball -- and pulled out a gang of bone chips and cartilage fragments.
Has been very good since then. Had the same procedure on my other leg. Also very good results.
If you are having problems with this joint I encourage you to make sure that the original diagnosis is correct. Mine wasn't and I paid for it with lost time, additional surgery, and permanent damage. About that damage: I'm good for cycling and other low-impact sports, but I'm not s'posed to run or participate in certain sports. I will also eventually be getting more clean up surgeries as more cartilage flakes off and, quite possibly, a full hip replacement at some point if the damage gets too bad.
So please be extra cautious -- I don't want anybody else to go through that ********.
