Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder.
To start with I'm a roadie that MTB's but my technical skills suck hence this thread.
In late January I had an accident while MTBing and injured my right hand. I went to the doctor as soon as possible where she sent me for an x-ray. Nothing really came back on the x-ray so we decided to wait thinking it was just a bad sprain. While I had use of the hand it was very painful and most of the time shifting my Ergo's had to be done with my index finger on the mouse ear verses my thumb. A call to my doctor had me shipped off to an orthopedic doctor that ordered an MRI. It turns out according to the MRI that there is an interruption of my ulnar collateral ligament. I will be going for reconstruction surgery in less than 6 hours and will face 6 weeks of no right had and up to 8 weeks before I can get back on the bike training. Needless to say I'm not very happy about this although I there has been some value here on the lessons learned.
It has been very interesting to plan on how I was going to do many things independent of others with use of only one hand.
Probably the most important lesson learned was to wimp out and let your health care provider dig deeper. I took the tough guy approach and took the "lets give it some time" approach. My doctor did offered to either give it time or to ship me off to a hand specialist. If I would have pushed my doctor considering when I had the injury I would be back on the bike instead of looking at this long period of recovery just as the weather is turning into some of the best Spring training weather.

I started getting some pretty bad left knee pain after a race in 1996. Went to the doc and he ordered an MRI, clean. He suggested a scope of it, but I opted to give it some time. The knee never got better and I ended up not riding a lot to minimize the pain. Fast forward 10 years. I go to the doc and get another MRI, again clean as a whistle. I opt this time to have it scoped. What did they find? Two tears and a shot plica. Fixed it all up with the exception of one tear that would necessitate almost full removal of the medial meniscus, which is where I still get most of my pain. (praying it goes away)
Well, now I am in PT 2x a week and riding about 3 miles a day. I have a 1.5 hr PT routine that I do every day, sometimes 2x a day. It feels a lot better than it did pre op, but I am a long way from being "back". It needs lots of stretching, but mostly strengthening. For over 10 years I favored the bad leg in everything I did: going up stairs, squatting, riding, ...everything! The left side of my whole body is weaker and needs lots of work.
We just added the mini trampoline and it is going ok. I'm certainly getting some "new" knee pain from this one, but I will work it just like all of the other plateaus that you reach in therapy.
Moral of this story is the same as yours. Don't be afraid to dig a little deeper, in this case literally. I do feel much, much better than I did before surgery and I am really excited to get back to riding. I am doing it right; not pushing it so hard as to set me back. It is difficult to do sometimes, especially on a nice sunny Spring day when my buddies are all heading out for a good ride.
It is a delicate dance and it takes severe dedication, but I am seeing results/dividends. I give it another couple of months before I am back. It's going to be soooooo sweet!
I am also seeing a professional PT/bike fit guru this weekend to get my position dialed as well as cleat location and custom shoe inserts.
