Listen! Rep Power Request (please do not panic)

*Disclaimer : This was written a few days ago (well, almost a week now), in a time where the forum was less likely peaceful then now, but I still have to post it anyway. /Disclaimer*

    Hi MTBR Community,

This is an request to the MTBR forum owners concerning the Reputation system and his functions.

I know that the forum of MTBR as more then 350 000 registered members, and 36 000 active members at the moment. Being able to establish a system of reward and trust by allowing each member to decide wether or not another member is valuable to the forum community is good, but many failures have been reported thought.

For example, if a member ask a question in one of the forum, and another member respond to it and then solve the problem, a reward is greatly appreciated. It's a good way of saying thanks you for your time by adding to the member reputation, which is a social rank up in a extend.

But then, people who spam the forum and give wrong answers on purpose to harm the community.

...etc, so you get the point, trolls still spreads around like they used to and they now have a great shield to protect them when insulting people with the current rep system.

We then have the choice between 3 options in order to get this straight.

    1. Remove the rep system.

    2. Only allow positive rep to be given.

    3. Allow both negative and positive reputation to be given, but the name of the user giving reputation must be showed to the member receiving it or to all forum users.

So now we have to choose the way we want to go.

I propose we let the admins decide, then sanction their decision to be sure every one's happy then.

I'm doing this to help the community. Please do not consider this request as anger or spam against the forum administration.

Edit form the original text : Considering a very peaceful week about rep issue, I'm aware that some people might get this as a flame war being brought back. It isn't. I think now should be a great time to discuss about it, since most of us are now well aware of what they want and how it works. /edit

    Regards,

    David

    ugh.

every user (including myself) can only rep an individual once every 100 reps given.

also trolls do not have much rep power....and they don't last long here.

new users have no rep to give (+ or -).

To add - it's only an online forum...please do not take it personally unless it breaks MTBR's Forum Rules. If that happens please report the post and we will look into it.

If there is a user you have a personality conflict with use your ignore feature...it really works.

    hope this helps

    Thanks for reply CHUM.

As I said, times are very peaceful right now and I think you're all doing a great job keeping the trash out of the forum, congratulation on your work mods.

And no, I do not have any problem at all with any members, and I was not posting this for myself, but for all of those who I come across in threads, still getting troubles with rep sometimes..

I'm not talking about the loss of rep, but more about the possibility to simply insult someone, totally anonymously, and not having any ways to feel ok about it (mostly for really hot opinions and faith). It's like sending hate letters by mail to someone... But at least the forum can decide to shut down that malfunction and allow everyone to have a even better time here...

CHUM, I know reputation is about the last of your concern, but with so much people around here, it would be a nice thing to consider those 3 options if anyone else makes the demand.

    Thanks,

    David

this is where you should realize it's only an online forum.

unless it breaks forum rules please do not take it personally. We can see who reps who and will investigate reported ugly/nasty/racist/violent insults and take the appropriate action.

a user can only insult via rep comment 1 every 100 reps (with a max of 10 reps given per 24 hour period).

Again, I'm not taking it personal... And you only need a few words to do damages... I guess that since you're a mod, not much happening on your side, and you're not the type of guy who is persecuted very much... but still.

That's why I asked the community too to express themselves about it. If everyones is feeling ok with the current settings, then I'm happy. I just wanted to give everyone a chance to tell if they'd like to have something changed. If not, then it's very good.

    Thanks,

    David

Once we start getting paid for the amount of rep we have, then we should care. Until then it's just a number and green boxes.

If it was not obvious in my previous posts I will try to be more clear.

Forum Rules apply everywhere on MTBR - including the rep system.

Trolling, insults, baiting, etc. will not be tolerated and will end in a Time Out or outright ban.

    Thank You,

May I suggest a duel system of postive rep points and negative rep points. I like the idea of negative rep points just to act as a flag for the those who are to immature to comment or participate on the forum.

(On a side note can we get a WD-40 icon just to flag riders who use WD-40 on their bikes. This way we know whos comment to avoid on maintenance issues.)

Problem with giving negative rep, and having to post your name, is recieving neg rep in retaliation from whoever you left negative rep for. It is childish and immature, but I am sure that it happens.
I resolve to constantly assert my honest opinion on anything and everything - whether it is requested or not.

I would think that if you are giving negative points then there would be a form that would have to be filled out telling the moderators as to why you gave that person negative points. The whole idea is make it cumbersome enough that it is seldom used.

Here again is the results of the poll on reps that I put up a couple of weeks ago.

View Poll Results: Where do you stand on Rep?
Like it just the way it is.........................................10 10.75%
Like the positive rep part, but lose neg reps............13 13.98%
Hate the whole thing............................................. 32 34.41%
    Couldn't care less.............................................. ..38 40.86%
Use it, use it, use it while you still have it.

I am thinking that if you have a Rep Power of 24 then you are not spending enough time on your bike and likely spending way too much time on a computer!

Frankly, I didn't even know what Rep Power was until recently. I don't think that it matters at all to the vast majority of users!

I got neg rep for making an observation about the rep system. Again, stupid.

How is the rep a "reward?" What does it actually DO? That I have yet to figure out. I just now clicked on the "my account" button above and saw that I had some rep left for me, 4+ and 1- that only said 33, so I have no idea what that means. Actually, it means absolutely NOTHING to me. I don't get an email when I get reps, so I have no idea when they come, I don't usually ever go to the "my account" button, so I never have any idea what it's at. I never "rep" anyone because it serves no purpose. If I start receiving something tangible for rep, maybe I would find a use for it. Until then, as others have posted, the rep discussion is just beating a dead horse.

When you get to 20 rep points you can redeem them for strippers or something else of little or no value.

I try to help as much as possible, I say mean things when I deem them appropriate, I make jokes and sarcastic comments that don't translate well to type, I accept that some people are too stupid or immature to understand how and why to "rep" someone, and when I get a pointless negative rep I'm usually a little baffled but at the end of the day rep doesn't mean much.

Is my opinion or advice more or less correct if someone last month negative rep'ed me? No seriously... is it? I'm super worried.

If you're so worried about getting negative rep then start making comments that can't be taken in a negative fashion. Otherwise, carry on and take what the peanut gallery gives you for better or worse. If you're actually giving good information the rep system will average out to say so.

Here's a telling incident regarding negative reps and at least one person who gives them. A few weeks ago, you may remember the Tweakers on the Trail thread that enjoyed quite a ride, drifting into the role of gov't, the constitution, taxes - all that good stuff. I got a neg rep "bleedin heart commie - just to piss you off". Apparently, someone didn't care for my liberal views - respectfully expressed, mind you. So in a subsequent post, I mentioned the neg and said it didn't piss me off, in fact it made me smile. I've never been called a commie before.

Now to the point - a month later, I get the exact same neg. So someone waited until whatever criteria have to be satisfied to give another neg to the same person. So, to whoever I annoyed, I'm still not pissed off at you, just impressed at what an angry person you must be. Let it go, man, it's not worth it. Peace brother.

Dont worry so much about your Rep. It isnt very important. I find it ironic that the post that give me positive rep are usually jokes of some sort, yet posts where im serious and actually help someone yield nothing. It just proves that it doesnt really mean anything.

That said, I will rep you to counter you negative rep.

I've gotten some bad marks from the admins for bashing Obama in a thread that "seemed" to me to be political in nature. I got over it with a lol! (called me a tea-bagger). I also got some for being drunk and sarcastic!

Haha! My rep just went from red to green! Was it my admission that I'm a tea-bagger, per'se, or that I drink and bash people in the cyber-world???: Don't care, I love this site. Too many members with too much information to not log on. If you let the rep-power get the better of you, you may not get the full bennies of the site!

That's where you're wrong. "We" don't have any say in the matter. It's entirely up to the administrators of the site so to flog a dead horse, stop flogging the poor deceased beast.

It's obvious that the way to get the pretty row of green squares is to first have a post count of 8 or 10/day. Myself, I'd rather spend that time out on one of my bikes.

I can see where David C is coming from on this. Karate Chicken repeatedly gives me Negative Rep once he reaches his quota to Re Rep. I am sure he does the same to other members. It doesn't really matter because his whole existence here is to make post that add nothing to the forum.

Well I've managed to maintain a negative rep (RED) the entire time I've been here and haven't directly insulted or degraded any individual.

It apparently doesn't drive my comments. I'm afraid of going GREEN to be quite honest. It may soften me up too much.

As a total noob here, I will never understand how this crazy system works! What I do know is that when someone puts up a damn good trail report or insightful post, they get my vote for positive power.

Plus, giving someone neg rep power for their political views is just plain silly.....

I'm more inclined to read the comment by a user with neg rep (red bar) because I secretly hope it'll be something ridiculous and entertaining.

I haven't posted here in a while, now I know why. The biggest issue is Rep. Good thing my I don't measure my worth based on the Rep of Empty Beer.

I'm a moderator on one paintball forum, owner/admin on another, and both use the reputation system. It's nice to be able to + rep people for helpful info, when they post up pictures of the things the have done to make their paintball marker personal, and so on. I'll only neg rep someone who is an asshat, breaks forums rules, etc. It's also funny to watch how sensitive people are about neg rep. Some have went so far as to cause enough trouble that we ban them.

Rep system or not, I often look at profile info or number of posts when considering the weight and character of a contribution. New members get some slack, long-time members less so.

At the same time I look at the language used , too. If someone asks for specific expertise and a contributor responds with something like "well I've never done that but I would suppose..." or they don't bother to read the previous contributions. Someone from East Jesus, Nowhere talking about how to manage SF Bay Area advocacy.....

It takes a while to learn how to use this site to its best advantage. By then you have figured out who are the less supportive of understanding cycling issues and who is destined to get banned.

That said there are a few very challenging contributors who have support here; it represents the less conforming aspect of our sport. Fair enough. That's us.

Almost forgot. On our forums, enough positive rep is also a requirement ( as well as 50 posts and 30 days being a member) to post in the B/S/T section. There's quite a few forums that don't have requirements for that section but unlike them, we haven't had any real scammers taking advantage.

And, this is another reason why the rep power thing is useless - this message was left by this member (Obviously a D-bag) along with his negative rep..."I was super tempted to make this a neg. rep because it would have amused me. So I am. AndrwSwitch. Actually, though I agree with your post. " Neg rep me and posted this message. The entire rep thing is useless because of this very thing. Lame!!!

I was just thinking, I might pos rep someone for something pretty random but I don't think I'd conjugate the verb with an apostrophe.

As much as we say this whole rep thing isn't important it makes for long threads.

I like the option David mentioned of be able to just give pos rep. The people who give good advice will continue to accumulate chiclets and the trolls, etc will stagnate.

FWIW Kids, MTBR is not a great 'selling point" when a chick asks " What do yo you do?"
    Honestly... ahh I give up

    Thanks 'delll... I'll remember it.

Too bad I just pos rep you already for a good contribution to the MTBR community... But you gotta give and take. It's part of the game.

At least this time I know it's not a fake 'delll signature

Good thing to know that I never gave negative rep yet... I only use the "post reply" form to express myself when I'm not ok with someone... But at least you had the balls to sign it. Not like the 8 others here who sent me creepy neg rep comments...
