P.S. All kidding aside, it is a manipulative way for forums to try to motivate their members to post more. You know, if you're a real man then you'll work to up your Rep Power number, right? But in reality it means nothing. The more you post, obviously the more you visit, and the more you visit, the more the forum can charge its advertisers. Seriously, pay no attention to your "Rep Power" number. It's a ploy.

Of course I'm assuming all this... because I'm paranoid.

I like ploys: let's play. Everyone on this thread will post 5 posts a day every day in addition to their regular posts. This is what I was talking about above after I researched "REP Power"

I thought maybe "Rep Power" had some connection to the amount of time you've been a member of MTBR.com. If there is any connection between your rep power and your post count then it makes no sense. There are people out there with more than triple my post count and their rep number is far lower than mine.

Honestly I think its just another gimmick put in place by "Da' Man" to hold us down.

On my way to Repdom? I don't know if I'm ready... It reminds me of the time my grandpa said that I was ready to be promoted to operate the sausage stuffing machine, hence forth known as the sausage fiasco of 1978... Maybe we are not all meant for Rep Power?

So I attempted and failed at removing the rep **** from my personal **** ****, but to no avail.

I decided on a new goal, and hopefully I'll get some help- I want to be the MTBR member furthest in the hole. You know what to do.

LOL... On some other forums, we keep on clicking each other's REPs just for the fun of it. Then boost to each other about how we are better coz our rep is more... LOL

One forum I used to frequent had a thanking system, where you could thank people for their useful posts. Then you'd have the number of times you were thanked as a metric rather than a postcount or "rep." This seemed to promote more community than competition, provided no benefit for useless or distasteful posts, and obviated the "+1" post indicating agreement. Worked pretty well, at least in that community.

I don't think you have to log out because my rep power is 3 and I never log out. I keep a tab open 24-7 to MTBR. I am always logged in so if you needed to log out my Rep power would be 1. Anyway, today is a new day. 1

I just repped you up man!

I think it should work like this though.

Ride a SS? Start with 6.

    Rigid fork? Add 2

    Suspension fork, subtract 1

    29er? Add 2

    26 only? Minus 1

Own both a 26 and 29 SS? Add 8. Because you are truly enlightened.

Is at least one of those handbuilt steel? Add 1

    Nice guy? Add 1

And that right there is how Sparty got a rep power of 18. Legendary hero to Singlespeeders everywhere.
Thanks to www.weavercycleworks.com for my awesome bike frames!

He rides geared during the summers. FS. So, hmmmm.... Maybe some extra sweet bonus points for running SS even back when he was attending Galilee HS, you know, with Jesus.

    You forgot about 650b.

Thanks for the rep, but I really want to get into the red, so votes down will make me feel warm and fuzzy. A man needs goals.

These are my favorite bits from the announcement:

Minimum Reputation Count - How much reputation must a user have before his reputation hits count on others?
    10

Daily Reputation Clicks Limit - How many reputation clicks can a user give over each 24 hour period? Administrators are exempt from this limit.
    10

    Reputation User Spread
    - How many different users must you give reputation to before you can hit the same person again? Administrators are exempt from this limit.
    100

    i like this one:

What is it and why is it important?
It is a way of sorting who are the really good contributors to the forum and who are not. It's like Ebay's seller Rating where you can quickly tell who are the established/trusted members of the group and whether you should buy from them or not.

just for sh*t and giggles, i searched few members here who sells stuff, not so very accurate rating IMHO.

Ok, so this is getting to be one of my favorite features. So far I had a couple great comments in the rep power, some of them with the vaunted red seal of disapproval.

    "he is negative."

    "mean bad post.'

"i like his cookie duster "

    and my favorite- "Lovable *******."

    This is better than Facebook.

EDIT: I did more searching into the social aspects for this site. First off, we can all be friends and send friend requests. We could also start a social group. The latter bit is confusing to me, because there are already lots and lots of social groups here....

And... this really is a bit more like Facebook that I'd like to admit.

This is rep-tarded. I liked the fact that Empty Beer (I like that, btw) distinguished itself rather thoroughly from pinkbike ("Dude, gnarly! Mad props" "Dude, wack! Mad neg props."). I suppose it's time to quit lurking and get my post count up so I can be one of the cool kids.

The tags are something I've really enjoyed. I am upset that if someone searches my anus they'll get routed here. Is is possible to make that a search for an interesting thread?

But, you do have 2 green dots, just like francois, has so that must mean something...

I notice Mike from BD doesn't have any rep points either. Maybe vendor profiles are excluded?

Simple: Rep Power is your power to increase somebody else's Rep. If your Rep Power is 10, one click from you can give the other guy 10 Rep points.

Hover your mouse over them. The first one tells if you are online. It is basically useless since I keep a tab open to MTBR all the time even when I am out riding so I am reported online 24-7. The 2nd one is to add rep to someone because you liked the post. The 3rd one is to report the post for not conforming to the forum rules.

    Tags... another forum feature.

Apparently, somebody has thought that they are appropriate for describing this thread Clicking a Tag gives you a list of threads where that Tag has been used.

Everybody can add two Tags to a thread. You can edit or remove your own ones.

I can't lurk any longer. I am getting an error message that won't let me see pictures because my post count isn't large enough.

To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 8 posts.

You have been here for a while so I'd think you would have some "rep power". Will try adding some seeing if the system works.

Thinking that if one has been on the forums for a # of years then it defaults to 10.

Perhaps the rep point system was designed keeping spammers and discouraging people from causing trouble on the forums. Few of the forums it has been a reoccurring issue.

I wonder how many new people will not bother with the forum because they have to post 10 things to see pictures. Many new people don't have anything to post for a while. So either they will leave and probably never come back or not come back for years or there will be a bunch of posts like "Sorry fellows, I am just trying to get my 10 posts so I can see pictures". My bet is that this one will go away when they figure out it is hurting their growth which will hurt the amount they can charge to advertise, etc.

I've been using mtbr actively since 2002 (since the old school forum) and I only got a 9, so I don't think 10 is standard. Just like anyone confronted with a change I do not really like it, but at the same time maybe a cock measuring contest is just what mtbr needs... I do not plan to rate people. When I use mtbr I usually have something like a dozen tabs open in my browser, I don't have time to rate when there is so much to read!

Okay guys, this is a very effective way to encourage me to never mess with this forum again. I don't have many posts in the years that I have visited this forum, so I am guessing that I won't meet the minimum to see pics, and therefore will quit visiting. I am not going to post just for the sake of posting. I learn a ton from other people's experience, and only post if I feel I have something relevant. I'm just saying...

Like I already said. The 10 posts to see pictures will start costing them money and it will go away.

I hope not. I like the new guys and their personalities.

As for the lurkers, I get the idea of not posting, but if it means new and interesting posts or threads, then I am hoping the new "rules" means you are more involved.

I mean, I'm a dick, but I mostly don't mean it and no one takes me seriously anyway. No one else is too bad.

Yes, Sparticus, I realize that, but he is discouraged by the whole concept. There will be many like him. You Sparticus and I are the type personality that are not easily discouraged, but there are many other people that won't deal with crap and will just vote with their feet.

I am undecided about the "Power" thing, I can see advantages and disadvantages, but basically, I see the 10 post to view pictures thing as a huge loss all the way around.

Nuck, I feel your pain, but this is all free and they way it is paid for is that they are a business so in reality; even though we are the foundation of their monetary gain, we are not really the boss. The changes (other than the 10 post rule) will have no effect on their overall take in my opinion so it would have been nice if they asked us.

The argument that it will get rid of trolls and lightweights, etc. doesn't really hold much water with me because I haven't seen many trolls, etc. on this forum. The few that have showed up would still be able to post and not seeing pictures would not be a deterrent to trolls. And we would deal with trolls they same way that we the users have in the past.
