How are the midgets getting on in our sport?

I've never encountered a midget mountain biker, but they must be out there. What size bikes do they ride? Bikes come in kids sizes, but they aren't built for adult level riding, which I would imagine an adult midget would be doing.

    Anybody know?

Do we have any midgets in the membership who could share their riding experiences?

Don't know if this is for real or not but guess it will be custom.

A quick google search and you'll find your answer, they are out there.

Not trying to be that guy but I think they seriously do NOT like being called midgets. Little people or dwarves from what I understand.

Being only 5'8" I have gotten a little grief now and then for being short myself - I just can't imagine what dwarves go through or how those who mtb find a real ride. Must be annoying.

Oh no, there are so much dumber.

As far as the little bikes go, I'd expect a decent 20" bike is available, and you could easily swap out parts for a pretty good build. I've never thought about a 1x10 gearing on a 20" bike compared to a 29er, but I guess it would be OK. A couple acceptable 24" air forks are available, and with a disc hub, they'd work with a 20" tire. Ultimately, I'd probably go with a single speed rigid though.

I've never met a colored person on a MTB either (NB, I emitted 'black').

I'm a native to my country (more brownish) & have yet to meet another brown face out on the trails.

Event at race events, I'm like the only brown face!

    Is MTB'in racist!?

Haven't seen a dark dude/dudette in any edits either...

    Mmm...

They generally ride in the foothills, not the mountains. On a scale-adjusted basis they are every bit as good as the taller riders.

I see all nationalities on bikes around here at the races and I'm in cornfield central.

No racism here, everything is simply a matter of who finds interest in the sport. Race, sex, etc have no bearing and shouldn't matter (much less have been brought into a thread here).

Actually, I have a friend (who does not ride) who told me that dwarves exist in fairy tales, he is a midget. So you need to be careful about calling them dwarves.

One thing that concerns me is chainstay length. The smaller wheels will have a really short one and affect the width of cassette that a midget could safely use. 11 speed would be right out. Possibly 8 speed would be their maximum, but I have not tested this scientifically.

There would also be an issue of getting the best tires in the smaller wheel sizes. That could be a serious concern.

For the last 14 years I've been hoping for a little person to come into my workplace to be my assistant. He'd need to grow a goatee and get the same glasses as me.
    I'm not holding my breath.

When I was a kid there was a kid in my neighborhood that was a little person. He was killer on a BMX bike.

No, it isn't. We need to be inclusive and stand together to help solve the technical challenges that a minority group might face when trying to enjoy our wonderful sport.

Now that's bad.... Sometimes I wonder how people can get out of bed in the morning without hurting themselves.

My question is, why in the heck does "skin color" matter? Seriously, it doesn't make or break a person, it's their choices that should define them not their skin color. Same with their height for that matter. Human is human. Doesn't matter which way you look at it, religious or scientific, we're all just human.

The fact that this thread has survived this long simply reinforces the all too pervasive level of ignorance and intolerance in our society, of which this forum is a microcosm.

The OP should be banned permanently and the moderators should be admonished for allowing this type of derogatory slur to bantered about as if no one has any concern for the impact that such hate speech can inflict.

If I was an advertiser, I would pull my ad immediately.

actually midgets being short isnt a stereotype, coloured people being "coloured" is also not a stereotype (regardless of black, yellow, caramel or white), but when it comes to New Zealanders.....then we are allowed to open the floodgates (as long as they are not black).

Actually this thread has done something very well. The cycling community likes to think itself on the better end of the spectrum of society.

And guess what, this thread show that even being cyclists, decency and respect are still all but a total loss.

On the other side, too many things skinned people around here. When you spend much of life around "others", the ones that are not thin skinned and offended by everything, you find that everyone has a sense of humor. So be able to take it since everyone here has dished it out on these forums numerous times. As long as it's not distepectful discrimination shut up and learn to laugh. Pull the preverbial stick out of your ass.

There is a guy who owns a mobile phone shop near me who is very short. He built a raised floor behind the counters so that he is on similar eye level to the customers. A good idea, except that his assistant is normal hight...

You know, this thread made me realize that I used to specialize in making bikes and wheels for Clydes, heavy and tall. I've also become kinda good at building somewhat light weight kid's bikes. My sister in law, who is kinda short still rides a 29er that I built for her.
Besides kids, I've never had to build a bike for anyone under 4'11". Makes me wonder what I would be able to come up with if someone wanted a fattie.

Yet another vapid response displaying a high level of ignorance.

Hmmm. I'm 6'1" but my wife is likely the only person that calls me "handsome" so I'm gonna have to go with working full-time raising a family and finishing my bachelors and masters degrees while traveling the planet for the Air Force. Actually, I credit most of my career with my cycling. If I weren't in reasonable shape from commuting I wouldn't have been able to recover from a serious back injury when I was 19 or stay in service for 33 years. Cycling keeps me mentally focused at work and helps me return to father/husband mode on the ride home.

mods, I will request a lock. Obviously no one here wants to be serious about this subject, instead throwing insults, racial slurs, and the ever present, vomit inducing, concern trolling. It's no wonder I've never seen a wee man on a bicycle. After talking with bicyclists they probably decide to do something else with their lives.

I've lived my entire life in a marginalized group of society and have faired quite well thank you. You think it's easy going through life with a Seinfeld humoristic view on everything in life? It's not, when there's a huge part of society that has absolutely no room for any humor. By the way have you had that stick surgically removed from your rectum yet?

BTW my first response in thread [post #20] was the first to agree with JB that this thread was the dumbest in history. I don't go through life making fun of those less fortunate. On the contrary I'm always one to help and treat them like equals. I fell into the abyss of humor displayed within this thread. Nothing was said by me that even this minority group of society wouldn't find humor in as well.

It's attitudes like yours that have supplanted any kind of reasonable discourse unless of course it agrees with your opinion.

I've seen a very short girl on a road bike. I can only assume the bike was custom made with what looked like 26'' wheels. All I know is that she left me for dead. I have a good friend who's very short. He's not a dwarf but he is short! Should I treat him differently from my other friends? I've never seen anything to suggest he'd enjoy that.

I think it's a bit foolish to condemn everyone who posts on a thread like this, do you know everyone's motives? I can't speak for anyone else but I'm taking the subject seriously because... why not? If short people are marginalised then the answer is to...not talk about them? If someone has difficulty riding because of a hand injury we can talk about that but somehow being short is different? If I was very short I'd want to be treated the same as everyone else, which would include taking jokes about it. I get ribbed from my friends about being fat, bald and anything else they can think of. It's a sign of affection and trust and I pity the people who don't understand that. I have encountered people like that and frankly, they are a pain in the backside!

Respect is not about petty political correctness. It is about warmly embracing other people as equals and treating them as such. Trying to treat them as 'special' has exactly the opposite effect.

Long video but solid, down-to-earth advice:

I'm not surprised, from what I saw when I was last down your way you might be the only Maori south of Christchurch!?

MTB does seem to be a fairly white sorta sport in Northland too, there have been a few Maori in our club over the years, good rides too most of them. One guy used to be the first to the top of every climb, and when you did finally catch up to him he'd be sitting there smoking an unfiltered roll-your-own ciggie!

Well, we seem to be giving this subject some short discussion. Shortly, we should talk about all the tall riders her, problems finding xxl bikes and stuff.
