Let's hope there's not going to be any retaliation... I know this won't end all together the war against Al quaeda, but the fear is that they will double their effort to get us back...

I heard on TV that he was buried at sea in accordance to Muslin law. This annoys me greatly. First off, I feel his body should have been brought back to the US and put on display for a while, and have its identity independetly verified (you know the conspiracy theories are already starting). Second, he did not deserve to be buried according to his religious laws. He should have been buried inside a pig.

My dad is f--king brilliant...quoted from his Facebook page. Mike Gothro I think his remains should be preserved like Lenin and Mao and put on permanent display at the world HQ of the Jimmy Dean pork sausage factory. They could charge a small fee to let people f--k the eyeholes in his skull.

I've got to agree with bad mechanic here. He's a mass murderer. His body should be thrown in a ditch and set on fire. Stray dogs can clean up what's left.

What, would that offend people? That he's not buried according to Muslim beliefs? Tell that to the journalists his people are responsible for beheading. I wonder how Christians feel about being buried without their head. I wonder if they were even buried.

I don't think burial at sea is exactly Islamic law.
There were certain ceremonies conducted (like a bathing of the body by Muslim men) prior to sea burial. I think that is what they are referring to.

As to the burial at sea, the reason is simple.
Its annomous. There is no burial plot that may later become a shrine to his followers.

Why give Osama any type of burial? Should've done everything against his belief on burial.

Rule # 1. Need to be burial within one day.
Bury him a few weeks later after doing a thorough autopsy on his body.
    Rule #2. etc....

or let NYC decide what to do w/ his body.

People support the troops but they don't understand what they deal with. Osama was a POS.
But if we do what they do and abuse the corpse, drag it down the street and cheer, hit it with shoes and hang it from the local bridge we are literally putting soldiers lives at risk.

Due to a lot of different factors it is OK in their eyes to do it to us but if we do it to them you have more locals turning blind eyes to IED's being buried. Fewer people willing to drop a dime on a safe house or report troop movements. Or worse, willing to pick up a rifle and switch from Muslin to terrorist.

Kill or capture him, (honestly, none of us know for sure). Confirm who we have, dispose of him in a way that cannot be easily used as a rally point and go to work on the rest of them.

If you want to go off on me feel free, just make sure you have been deployed to the Middle East first, otherwise you are just talking out of your fourth point of contact, (i.e. your A$$).

Islamic law is that the corpse if buried within 24 hours. The US didn't want to create a shrine somewhere by burying him in the ground. That being said, seemed awfully quick to be putting him in the water, I'd personally given it 23 hours first and have plenty of witnesses confirm it was him from multiple countries. The last thing we need right now is another conspiricy, regardless of your political beliefs, our country is polarized right now, and we don't really need any more contributions to that cause. OK, sorry for the rant.

Pretty sick how many of my fellow Americans think it's cool to desecrate a corpse as though we're some sort of heathen-nation ...well
Burial at sea is easy, anonymous, and appropriate. Good riddance Bin.

Sorry, but as has been pointed out to me many times, this is a MOUNTAIN BIKE FORUM. I've posted subjects in here that have have directly related to the sport many times only to have them moved or deleted. As also has been pointed out to me, there are other forums to post this kind of POLITICAL subjects in (F88me?) This has NOTHING to do with the sport and should be PROMPTLY moved.

I would expect mtbr to hold to the same rules as everyone else. The f88 forum was deleted, as most any other social and political discussion, and should should this thread

How does this affect my life?

Nada. Just like when Bin Laden was our freedom fighting darling in the 80's blowing up Russians.

Now, what about the other billion people in the world that don't like our policies overseas.

You know, the policies this story squashed. Specificially where the bombs killed Kadahfi's young grandchildren, or the missle strikes that regularly kill innocent children in Afghanistan/Pakistan. The fact is, it's a war crime whether you like them or not.

    How you like them apples?

And before you get on the America bashing bandwagon, I'm a former U.S. Marine. Doesn't change the truth.

Safe? What man, have you gone completely batty?

Heck, I live in a country that killed over 600,000 of its own citizens in a war over a bunch of people that didn't come here willingly in the first place.

Now, whether our friend AZ.MTN's wants to celebrate or wallow in this fact is only indicative of another generations unwillingness to learn from the mistakes of history.

This should make any thinking individual stand up and take notice. I realize that's not all of us.

    That's in reality.

You see my young friend, there's a difference between being in the military and drinking the political kool aid.

I was somewhat amused watching the coverage this morning of all the college kids celebrating Bin Laden's death, as if it was a meaningful event in their lives, considering the fact that the vast majority of them wouldn't get with 500 meters of a military recruiter.

I'm not questioning their logic, because obviously they need another reason to have another drink. Will we really be surprised when in a number of years history is repeating itself as we sacrifice another generation of our best and trillions of dollars worth of debt for little apparent reason? Yes, of course. And we'll need a new scapegoat. There's always a new one around every corner.

I would expect they had a kill order.

Capturing him alive would cause far more retaliations.

Oh it's ok, it's just the internets.

But it is a serious topic. I'm not the least bit bothered by Bin Laden's death. I do question the manner in which is was accomplished.

I mean this is similar to paying $50,000 for an onion at the super market. And that Supermarket is owned by the ISI/Taliban.

    Doesn't matter.

This is the way it went down and the instructions the team had.

See Bin Laden or anyone even remotely resembling him or his detail at the objective.

    Bang, bang, your dead.

Until he said "go", it was a plan, not an operation. That said, the folks that planned it and the ones who carried it out deserve all the accolades we can give.

I don't understand why everyone is so happy about this. Sure, Osama was a phucker, but you can't kill a belief system. The "War on Terror" is perpetual because there's no way to smash radical Islam, let alone radical Christianity, etc. etc. etc. There's always going to be some radical bastard out there willing to kill and cause terror. Killing Osama will do nothing to stop the madness of terrorism. If anything, it just makes a statement.

Hey man, it's dark, you're in what is basically a hostile foreign country, people want to kill you just because you're an American, westerner, etc..

You aint got time to be doing a crotch grab like Crocodile f..kin' Dundee on everybody in the vicinity.

This is called 'guilt by association'.

There's plenty of time for taking names and tagging bodies after the shooting stops.

War like other forms of violence is an ugly business. It aint pretty and it aint clean, and unless somebody kills your family it can't be made politically correct or socially acceptable according to the norms of polite society. But alas sometimes it's necessary.

Be wary of anybody who seems to take delight in it. They are one of two things. Deranged, or thousands of miles away from the action.

Shot and buried at sea was too good for him. I'da rather seen him scalped and dragged through the streets of Manhatten by a team of pigs...before he was beheaded and burned at the stake. Oh wait, that would be stooping to their level

They were Navy Seals, not GI. There is no way it was a mistake.

Seals are the best at what they do.

On SAS building clear exercises, they use live people for innocents. Live grenades and smoke with your friends on the course. pros identify targets, they do not miss. They do not kill anyone they do not intend.

They were also in Pakistan, they were operating in friendly territory.

re crotch grab, awesome comment =-)

Even the suggestion that Pakistan is "friendly territory" shows how little you do know of the geo-political landscape. How many innocent Scotts died in the name of the King?

I really don't see how people can be out in the streets being all "YAY WE KILLED HIM!!! Wars over!"
No. There are still followers that will pick up where he left off.

Not saying it was a mistake. Clearly it's not a mistake when you discharge your weapon in combat.

Seals and SAS types are mortals too, and bleed just like the rest of us.

The whole general idea of course is to accomplish the mission.

If Bin Laden or what I perceive is a hostile in the objective area is standing there with a weapon or not, holding a strange woman in front of him I take the shot. No questions about it.

At that moment it is simply not an emotional question. And short of lining 'em up and executing them or some sort of Abu Garaib abomination the decision has already by made by the politicians.

Killing Osama Ben Laden in retribution is not lost on me. However, in a peculiar way, I am more satisfied that we were able to finally succeed at this mission. It was irking that we couldn't find this guy.

In the 80's we had US citizens held hostage in Iran. Two attempts were made to rescue them. One failed due to fuel miscalculations and the other due to sand getting through seals near the rotors. Both made me head-slap in that, "aw, come on you guys" sort of way.

In that sense I thought perhaps the inability to get Osama Bin Laden was a competence issue. That doesn't fit with our Mission Impossible mind-set about how we do things and is really disappointing.

Now it looks like we have been intricately misdirected for many years by some very substantial and influential people "associated" with Al-Qaeda. The myriad convolution of relationships in the Middle East, going in to this whole mess, has and will continue to be confounding. I am reminded of a few lines in Cleopatra :

Cleopatra: And as for having my quarters, as you put it, made ready,
my chief handmaiden has, by now, brought the others out of hiding.
    They should almost be finished.

Julius Caesar: I'm afraid that's impossible. We've had the doors under heavy guard.

Cleopatra: There are doors... and doors.

Julius Caesar: Oh, yes, of course.

There was no way he was going to be captured and tried in a court of law and start blabbing about how our govt. creates, supports and helps terrorists as long as they were supposedly "on our side".
