Not that much of a weight weenie anymore. Back when I raced all the time, I knew the weight on everything. It's a solid build for endurance and XC racing. Planning on Crested Butte 100k and try to qualify for Leadville. No sketchy ultralight parts on it, plush, fast and tough is what I was after and knew I would give up maybe 1.5 lbs in ultimate lightness.

    RockyMt,
Didja really have to quote the pics? Have a heart for the poor bastards on ATT smartphones

Got it on Thursday, standard XT build with some changes....

    Shifters: SRAM X0
    Rear Der: X0
    Cassette: SRAM XG-1080 11-36
    Brakes: XTR Trail
    Bar: Answer ProTaper Carbon

I kept the 3 ring XT crank but swapped the large ring out for a Salsa bash and swapped the stock 32 for a 36 ring
and made it a 2x10. Went for the DHX Air upgrade as well. At the shop w/ DMR platforms it weighed 32 lbs
but I'm thinking that with my Time ATACs on there it's definitely less.

Fun ride, climbs so much easier than my Titus Supermoto. Still dialing in the pressure and rebound settings on
    the fork and shock.

I'll throw the link up for my wife's new 429. The Enve UST wheelset with Tune hubs are light and stiff. 24.5lbs and going to the Xterra Worlds in Maui.

From this weekend. Yes the picture is slightly angled so it looks a bit steeper than it is, but not by much. I didn't take the picture.

    Nice Mach 429

    2011 Mach 429

    - Custom powder coating from Spectrum Powder works. While it doesn't show in the pictures, the final clear coat has metallic orange flake in it.
    - Fork is 2011 TALAS 29 FIT TERRALOGIC (95-120mm). This fork doesn't come in white, so Golden Bikes, Golden CO, took the guts out of a black TALAS TERRALOGIC and swapped them into a white F29 120 RLC FIT.
    - Stan's Arch rims with Stan's 3.30 hubs.
    - SRAM “silver” 2x10 X0 shifters, rear derailleur, and crank.
    - XTR front derailleur (The adjusting screws on an X0 front derailleur are not easily accessible with this frame).
    - Formula RX brakes with Shimano (180 front, 160 rear) rotors.
    - Niner Flattop carbon bar.
    - Thomson 100mm stem.
    - Thomson Elite setback seat post.
    - Maxxis Ignitor EXO 2.1 tires.

    Weight: 28 lbs

    Planned changes/upgrades:

    - When it becomes available, change X0 crank spider/gears from 39-26 to 38-24.
    - Dropper post, likely 100 mm Specialized Blacklite.
    - Currently demo’ing WTB Devo saddle. Not sure if this is the one or not.

    Can't Wait!!!!

Ordering my Mach 4 frame tomorrow. I think the 2011's are much sexier, but the 2010's are on closeout, so that's what I'm getting, don't think I'll be disappointed.

Been on an entry level hardtail (Specialized Hardrock Pro) since 2005, except for the the past 8 rides when I was on a 2009 Giant Anthem X and then the used frame I bought off ebay broke.......ugh, stupid me. The Mach 4 is what I wanted to begin with, but settled on something else to save money.

Looking at these pictures has me uber excited, can't wait to get my frame and build it up. Here is what my build will be, will post pics soon as its done:

Here are a couple of pics with the camera phone just before her maiden voyage.....what an AWESOME ride. I just thought my Anthem X was efficient, not only is the Mach 4 more efficient, it feels much more responsive to me.

Took delivery of my new bike over the weekend (large XT). First chance to ride it this morning. Absolutely love it. All the praise of this bike is well deserved.

    Planned tweaks are

    Oury lock on grips
    85mm stem
    Quick release seat post clamp
Also need another post to get my knees back a hair more.

    Thanks.

It'd be great to cut down on the number of competing colors on the bike for sure. Perhaps a kashima coat is in my fork's future.

Here's mine moments after I finished building it last night. Took it out this morning in the mud so will never be the same again :-/

It replaces an Ibis Mojo SL I crashed and burned (oops better change my footer). Pedals just as well but carries the speed better. Sweetness! I think I'm going to love this bike.

Shox: Fox RP23 rear and Float 36 RC2 160 PUSH tuned fork
Rolling stock: Hope/Stans flow with 2.35 Minion DHF single ply 60a rear, Roval Traversee with 2.5 Minion DHF Exo front
Cockpit: RS Reverb+ Selle SLR XC saddle, Burgtec RideWide 750mm bars, Thomson X4 50m stem, Lizard skins peaty grips
Drive train: XT cranks & front shifter, XTR RD & shifters, 9 speed; E13 turbo bash & BB mount Heim 2 chain tensioner I had to drill a hole in to fit
Bearings: Hope step down headset & bottom bracket
Brakes: Formula The One brakes & rotors 203&180mm
Pedals: DMR V12 Mag with Ti axles

Nice steed but your Firebird is like a Mojo SL on super steroids....and you can drop your bike or throw it if you like

Mostly love them.. I run 5 across my 3 bikes (couldn't quite justify the 6th!) :-)

Fantastic feel, endless power. I've dragged them all across BC, Leogang and Les Gets and never had them fade once.

Their only problem is that the bite point adjust is too fine. Generally I have to put some fluid in halfway through pad wear and then let it out again when I stick in a new set...

    Firebird

Had my firebird for about 3 months. Absolutely love it, the addition of the angleset and monarch rear shock have made this bike come alive.
    The rig

    It jumps really well too

First time trying to post pics hopefully they show up

Nice rig, love it!! It's almost exactly the same weight as my Intense Spider 29 with a XX build and I9 Enduro's but I have a RS RLT Ti140 up front and 120mm travel in back. I still love my Mach 5 and now that I have my Spider 29 I'm running the Mach 5 with the RS Lyrik SADH up front and I9 Enduros w/ burlier UST tires. It's a freeride lite build

Both Pivot and Intense are great brands

Picked up my wife's 5.7. Came in at 26.0 lbs exactly with the pedals. The relevant specs are 2011 5.7 size extra small with full XTR components. DT wheels, blah blah. She gets to ride it for the first time this weekend so we are really excited.

    5.7 and a Phoenix

    small 5.7
XO build from Pivot but I swapped out the brakes for Hope M4s with 180 front/160 rear rotors, replaced the grips with ODI lock ons, added an MRP 2x10 chain guide, Racing Ralph tires, burly Straitline pedals, and my faithful shark Fred.

small Phoenix, it's not done yet but here's the build and what it looks like so far
Fox 40, X9 drivetrain, Race Face Atlas cranks/bars/stem/post, Hope m4s with 203mm rotors, Hope hubs laced up up to MTX 31 rims (36 hole), Minion tires, MRP guide, ODI lock ons, a cheap saddle, and I'll be pulling my pedals and Fred off my 5.7 when I'm on this thing.

2011 large firebird - Fox RC4 - Lyrik DH, formula the ones, xt groupset + saint cranks. Hope evos on mavic en521.

Haven't weighed it, but my guess would be 34lb give or take a little bit.

Overall very happy, rides nice, not real quick on the ups, but more than makes up for that in fun factor.

Phoenix will hopefully finally arrive this week.

Nice Uphill=sad. Is that 2 jumps in a row or a gigantic double? Are you sticking with the gold bars or the Havoc? I have the Havoc and am really digging the wider bars.

It's a double, it's pretty big - i think the picture does it justice, the landing is the bottom right corner. If there was no one watching I wouldn't have done it, I was shitting myself on the approach! I haven't seen anyone else jump it, will have to go there on a shuttle day.

The bars are raceface Atlas FR - one in black and the other in gold. I bought the black because the gold was too gaudy. I have taken the black off for the phoenix and put the gold back on firebird.

780 wide I think, I have got long arms so that's a really comfortable width, only problem is clipping the bars on tight tracks, got some narrower AM bars that i might throw on for a few weeks. Also tried a 50mm & 70mm stem, would like to try a 35mm for the slow steep technical riding, just can't justify the cost.

I bought this in 09 after demoing one of the prototype 429 frames. I was blown away by the rear end stiffness and how well the rear suspension worked. In my opinion all the marketing propaganda about the dw link is true. I get the chance to try out a lot of different FS bikes and they are never as good.

The bike has been ridden a lot in all conditions and I have not had one problem with the linkage or bushings coming loose or creaking.

The best upgrade I made was switching from 100mm in the front to the Fox 34 at 120mm with a tapered steerer and through axle hub. Now the front stiffness is more inline with the back. The bike still eats up technical terrain going down AND up. I also shortened the stem to a 90mm and went with 28" wide bars. Next up is some type of dropper post.

Just picked up my Mach 429 last week from my LBS. XT build. It's running with tubes, but will eventually "go commando" with the tires. I have only put 32+ miles on it; however, what a difference the 429 is from my old 26 inch 2003 Specialized Epic. On my first ride, I took it to McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fountain Hills, AZ and rode one of my regular trail routes, which is 3/4 of the 16 mile Pemberton Trail. When I finished, I looked down at my watch and realized I knocked almost 10 minutes off my time. And I am not in best physical shape. But here is the crazy thing—I did not feel as tired or beat-up as I normally feel after riding my Epic. So, I immediately proceeded to the Competitive Loops in the park and went shreddin’ down those singletracks for more fun that day!

So why do I think the Mach 429 is the bee's knees? Maybe it's the DW-link, Propedal (have left it off on all climbs so far), and overall stiffness of the frame. Maybe it's the honeymoon feeling of a new 29 inch bike. Whatever the case, Pivot created a high quality engineered product and one badazz bike!

Inaugural Ride - Mag 7 in Moab

Had an unbelieveable weekend in Moab breaking in the 429. This bike is my absolute favorite out of the past 15 years of mtn biking- I made a last minute decision (after tesing the 429 and 5.7 among others) from the 5.7 Carbon to the 429 and I am so glad I did. I could tell I needed to work on my cornering some more due to the longer wheelbase, sitting taller and larger wheels but the speed and ease at which I took on drops, obstacles, step ups, etc. was impressive. Looking forward to the Front Range to open up in a couple of months - until then it will be trips to Moab and Fruita!

    429 crew looking good

Nothing does more different things as well. A great bike for long days. If I had to have only one, it would be the 429.

2009 Mach 5 Finally finished the build up!

I think I might keep this one around a while....

    2009 Mach 5 Frame
    Crossmax SLR wheelset
    WTB Bronson 2.1 tires
    Fox 140 RLC
    FoxRP23 (pushed)
FSA SLK carbon Post, Stem, Bars
    2011 XT Brakes
XT Cranks Front d. and Shifters
    XTR Rear Der.
    Silverado Ti Rail Saddle

I've had a lot of bikes including a mach 4 and this one seems to fill a nice gap between the race and all mnt. ( a true trailbike but still built up light enough for the occassional race)

Dreamy! Congrats on your ridiculously cool steed.

Curious what you got the weight down to with all that CF. Cheers...

My new '11 Pivot Firebird frame that I picked up in the classifieds for a REEEALLY good price while I wait for my '12 black FB frame to arrive. I sold my Remedy way too soon and the delivery for the '12 is not on sched, so I had to get something to fill the void; I got lucky! This one has the aluminum rocker and DHX Air, but the one I'm waiting for will have the carbon rocker and RP23.

Large came in at 31 lbs and a few ounces without the FD and chainguide.
    XX shifters
    XO cranks 24/38 w/bash
    XX 11-36 cassette
    XO med RD
    XTR Trail brakes 180/160
    XTR pedals
    '12 160 Talas RLC
    CBs Iodine 3 wheels
CBs Iodine 11 carbon bars and Iodine 2 stem 65mm
Specialized Tires: Puratory Grid 2.4 front and The Captain Grid 2.3 rear
    Chris King HS and BB
    '12 Rockshox Reverb

Waiting on the FD today and ready to shred. Can't wait to abuse this thing!!

Here is my new Mach 429. Built her Friday night but still have not got to ride yet due to all the rain. Mix of components x9 shifters, slx 2x9 cranks, project 321 hubs laced to stans ztr flow, cdale lefty ultra, hope tech x2 brakes, Time atac carbon pedals, and all red hoses. Turned out pretty sharp. Wish my wallet was
to but now I have one bad to the bone ride. Oh btw weighs in right under 25 lbs!! Couldn't believe it. Had to go find another scale to confirm

TFRANK - Quick question for you. I'm also running Stan's Flows on my 2012 429. I'm having terrible clearance issues betweeen the rear triangle brace and the tire. Literally, there is about 2mm of clearance. Clogs up when the trail is simply tacky. I'm running a 2.2 Geax AKA on the rear which is not a very big tire.

    Any clearance issues????

    Re: Clearence

    Same problem. I'm running 2.2 racing Ralph's. Thinking about ordering a 2.1 or 2.0

I am running Flows with a 2.1 Crossmark on mine, (pretty small tire) and it is really close to the brace as well. I was pretty shocked to see that the first time that I saw the bike built up. I doubt that I could get much more of a tire back there.

Just put a Michelin wild grip r 2.1 and still tight. I guess we are just going to have to live with it. I hope the guys at pivot made it to take the abuse. My buddies 2009 has twice the clearance but is still real close. I had to send my fork back so I havnt got to ride it yet. I should get it in Thursday. Ridden yours much yet?
