My wife's 5.7Carbon squeaks. I have been instructed to do something about it and obey. It seems the Pivot's pivots are sealed bearings. Are there suggested periodic maintenance to do's re the pivots before I check other suspects such as BB, seatpost etc?
my firebird has always been relatively squeak free... except right now the headset has a nice creak ...:madman:
anyway, almost everytime it has developed a squeak in he frame, it has been the shock bushings (full disclosure - i am a bushing curmudgeon)... one time it was the main bearings which simply needed replacing, but they were over two years old, i think... i never maintain my frame bearings, i always thought i'd do more harm than good...
anyway, i am curious as to what the correct answer is on bearing maintenance...
There's not much you can really do as far as periodic maintenance with the bearings since they are sealed units. The biggest thing is just keeping them clean and avoiding high pressure washing or use of degreaser on them. You guys are in the PNW right? Lots of wet, muddy conditions would warrant pulling the lower link out periodically and giving the entire assembly a thorough cleaning (pins, link, clamping surfaces). Just doing this and having a fresh coat of anti-sieze might be all it takes to cure the creaking. Another spot to check is the shock mounts. We apply a thin coat of grease to the reducers on the shock before installation and that really helps keep things quiet. As for what constitutes "periodic" intervals, that will depend on how muddy things have been. Hope this helps!
Send Josh and the demo tent up to Whistler. Tag along. We'll hook you guys up. Shar was lending the 5.7 out to another woman who now craves a Pink Mach 5.7 - she's a total pivotee.
I'd LOVE to get back up there! Not gonna make it this year, got a week in Winter Park already and planning some Moab time later on...Keep pushing for Josh though, maybe it'll happen next season.
