    Pivot LES - Reviews?

    Has anyone been able to throw a leg over the New Pivot Les yet? Curious to see how this stacks up against other Carbon Hardtail 29ers out there - especially in the S.S. configuration.

    We actually have 2 demo bikes built up and they saw plenty of riding at Dealer camp and Interbike....The demos are geared versions though...I took the Orange bike out for a short ride before Outdoor Demo and it was a lot of fun. Light, stiff and crazy fast. I'm not really a 29er guy but this one jumped nice and I even managed to get the manual down pretty nicely after learning the balance point. I kinda want one now

    That was the first bike I asked for at the local demo a few months ago. I had "to settle" for riding the insanely awesome 429c.

    I'm in the market to build up one of the superlight hardtail offering for some racing this year. I went to Outerbike in Moab this past weekend. I rode both the new Pivot Les and the Rocky Mountain Vertex. Both felt great! Incredibly nimble despite their fairly slack head head angles. Must be the super short (17") chainstays keeping the wheelbase short. Now Moab slickrock is not the ideal world for a hardtail in my personal opinion. I was much more comfortable out there on the full squish but the two hardtails handled it well and were a lot of fun because you could really throw them around. Super easy to manual over cracks/lips/ledges/etc. In this case I think the shallower head angles helped keep the steep techy descents from being too sketchy but didn't negatively effect the climbing. I rode both on a techy loop I was using to test full squish 650b bikes as well because I was looking for a buddy I got separated from. The bikes handled everything great for a hardtail. I personally will be building up the Pivot because I like the optional singlespeed dropout option and I live in AZ where Pivot is based. The reason I favored the Pivot and Rocky Mountain is because they both run 142x12 rear axles and my full squish race bike runs the same so I already of wheels for this bike. I do like the extra stiffness on a 29er as well.

    don't worry, there is no shame in wanting or even owning a hard tail 29er... on the other hand, if you find yourself gravitating towards spandex and campy components, then maybe it's gone too far ...

    i need to develop my crashing skills...

    Just ordered a Les today, should be in around the end of the month. Went with the neutral carbon with red. I liked the orange too but thought it was a little too bold a statement. Got the SS dropouts too. If it rides like I'm expecting, my Superfly SS might be moving on. Can't wait to build it up.

    Whom did you order it from that said they would have it in at the end of the month? I went to the demo at Mcd this past weekend and they did no't have a large for me to try out.

    I ordered it thru Blackstone Cycles in Cumberland RI. They are a new dealer to the area.

    I would check directly with Pivot, their customer service is top notch.

    Not a Pivot LES but I'm anxiously awaiting my BH Ultimate 29er frame. Looking forward to a change of pace from years of Trek. By the way the Orange looks wicked cool.

    Just picked up my frame from the shop. The fit and finish is impressive. I like the attention to detail with the SS kit. Very well thought out. I'll post some pics after i finish building it up.

    Waiting for the fork to return from Push. This frame is light as a feather. Don't worry about the clamp, its only holding the frame, no clamping force applied. I'll post some pics once she is built up.

    Ordered the Les in early Jan, I got lucky when a preorder backed out and I was next in line. Ordered it thru Blackstone Cycle in Cumberland, RI.

    I'll post weights and pics once the correct fork arrives. I built it up tonite using an old Fox RL fork from my GF Rig and the weight was 19 lbs 5 oz with the SS kit. Its got my heavy wheelset on too (DT 240's and Arch EX's). My race wheelset is 240's with Crest's and lighter spokes. think I should be able to get it in the 19lb range as a SS and maybe sub 21 lb as a 1 x 10.

    The frame was exactly 3lbs with the headset, BB, seatpost clamp and SS kit including dropouts mounted. Size small. See Pivot Les post in 29er bikes for more details and pics.

    Here are some pics and 1st ride impression. Its real cold and snowy right now in Mass so I decided to give my knees a break and set the bike up geared last night. It weighs out at 21.5 lbs with my winter rims and tires and 1x9 setup. Having been on a Superfly SS for the past 3 years, I was excited when I first read about the Les because it's geometry matches the Superfly with the notable difference of shorter chainstays and a longer toptube. Let me start by saying that Pivot has absolutely nailed the geometry on the Les. The bike feels more trail bike up front and more race bike out back. Acceleration is impressive, it feels like the bike gets up to speed a bit quicker than my 'fly. Whats interesting is even though the wheelbase is shorter, it rails turns with more authority. Ride quality is very refined, stiff in the BB and headube area but the rear chainstays are tuned to level the chatter in the trail. You stay more connected to the trail on the Les, my 'fly was stiff but a bit harsher out back. BTW, the Syntace P6 Hiflex post is a work of art and helps dampen the ride to a very comfortable level for a hardtail. Its only one ride but it took me a couple of miles to find my groove on this bike and by the 10 mile mark it felt just like home, I believe this is a true sign of a dialed bike. Very little was needed to tweak the cockpit in. I can't wait for the weather to improve so i can turn it loose as a SS.

    To think i had already convinced myself i really didn't need another bike after i was able to get through xmas without purchasing one. I think you now have me leaning back towards getting another bike and preferably the LES, which was my original intention if i was able to locate one in one of the LBS over the holidays.

    well done liv2ryd, thanks for the write up. sounds like we share the same interests in ride quality and expectations from our SSs. I'm pondering selling off the ridgeline and moving everything over to a Les by early summer. enjoy

    Purchased a Pivot Les with the XT/XTR build, converted to SS. I am using the geared parts to update another bike. The SS build is XT brakes and crankset, Stan's Crest wheels (tubeless) and Eggbeater 3s and the FSA bars, stem and post that came with the build. Bike came in at 20.04 lbs. It can easily get a pound lighter. Love the dropout adjustments and the CTD Fox fork. Only one ride to date, so it will be a few before I can comment on the ride. The first one felt pretty nice.

    Anyone want to update w/ further impressions?
    I'm in the market for a new SS for race season and have been set on another carbon SS, but so tempted by these! I wish I could demo one instead of just comparing angles and numbers to bikes I'm already familiar with.

    I probably have about 10 hours on Pivet less now, absolutely love the bike. I have been riding and racing an Air Nine carbon SS for a couple of years. The Air Nine is a great frame but I was done with the creaking EBB and having to change my seat postion everytime I changed gearing. So far no issues with the Pivot sliding drop outs. The pivot seems to be a little kinder on the body, not sure if it is the Pivot frame or the seat post, maybe the combo of the two. Hope this helps with your decision.

    Here is the Cousin to the Pivot Les. I got it built up last night. I'm still waiting on a set of I9 wheels but other than that it is complete. Still have some brake lines to shorten too. If it would ever stop raining around here I might get to ride it.

    Sorry. The frame is a BH Ultimate 29er. It looks very similar to the Pivot Les. The BH does not have the SS drop outs like the Pivot.

    DANG these look sweet. The orange alone almost made me buy one. Good thing the demo fleet does not have an XL yet or my wife would be very angry with me.

    Pivot seems to be doing lots of great things - hope they can keep the vision and put out fantastic bikes for years to come.

    Just curious, are you running a standard offset or a G2 fork on the Pivot?

    Just finished a build with the SS kit. Have not ridden it yet on trails and won't for a while as I am out of town for a bit. But it built up w/o a hitch and they seem solid. Actually it is a pretty nice setup with the covers for the der. mount and the cable hole covers etc... Only thing I do not like is that to run geared you need a 142 x 12 axle and to run SS you need a Std. 135mm QR. No big deal to pop off the end caps on my DT240's but it would be nice to make them both the same.

    Demoed a Les a few weeks back and the most striking feeling I had was that I felt right at home on it. My personal bike is a Mach 5.7c (medium) and the Les (medium) felt very comfortable. I rode on less technical terrain than I normally would (fireroads with some tech thrown in), but it seemed to handle the technical bits very well. I haven't demoed any other modern hard tails, but if I was adding one to my quiver I wouldn't hesitate from buying the Les.

    How does the frame fit you ?
    I'm 6'-2" and always been on XL frames but not sure about a 29er.
    I'd love to go from my 31 lb bike to a 21 lb rocket like that !

    I'm 6'2" also and I'm riding a large BH Ultimate 29er. It's a perfect fit for me. The BH is the cousin to the LES so geometry is very close.

    100 miles on my Les

    I now have put about 100 miles on my Les, all in Florida and all single speed. Compared to my SC Highball it is a bit more comfortable (seatposts are different and might be part of it). Geometry fits me better as well. Bike is easier to loft front wheel and steering seems a little slower but front end stay planted very well. Overall I am very happy with the bike and am glad I bought it. I am going to ship it out to Oregon for a summer trip and may convert back to gears for that. I have a XX1 crank so that I can easily switch out rear SS set up for a XX1 setup which is one of the main reason I selected the Les. Overall a very nice ride.

    New to the forum too. Here's my new Pivot Les. Medium weighs 21.5lbs with XX1 & XTR pedals. Got 20 miles in this morning for the first ride and the bike is a lot of fun. Fast and compliant; won't be missing my Epic that I traded in on this.

    Any 6'2-6'3 pivot les riders and if so, are you riding a L or an XL? I am debating on which size to get. I currently ride a L mach429, but i have my seat as far back as it can go.

    Their tech FAQ still says all pivot frames use a 30.9 seat post, and they usually keep it updated.

    Thanks for the info. I currently ride a L 429 and i find it somewhat cramped but easier to control vs my XL turner 5spot.

    I ride a 09 XL DW Sultan and it was interesting to compare it to the ride of the XL 429C. With its shorter chainstays, lower bb, carbon construction, super tight linkages, the 429C handled fantastically well. Better than the Sultan IMHO, and I really love the Sultan. Of course my Sultan is 4 years old, so not a real fair comparison. A better head to head comparison will be the Turner Czar w/120mm fork vs the Pivot 429C.

    I ended up going with the XL Les with the xo1 build. I took here home and swapped out the seat and the stem to a 95mm length one; as i felt the 110 that it came with made the steering to gyroscopic. I have two 20 mile rides on her so far and am thinking of maybe putting on a 100mm stem. Seems the 95mm unbalances the frame somewhat for climbing purposes, though for twisty turns it sure does rail those turns. I will say that if you are 6'2-6'3 then the XL is the way to go. It fits like a glove and you really dont notice that you are on a HT.

    I popped the 110mm stem back on for this mornings ride and what a night and day difference. This bike has a nice gitty up first step on her with the longer stem.

    So would you say it was stiff where it needed to be, yet compliant where it needed to be too? What width of handlebar did you go with?

    Yes, very stiff and yet compliant when things start to get rough.

    Mine came with the 740mm one, which took some getting use to.

    Overall I would say the two are very similar rides, with the Les being crazy light at around 21-22 lbs.

    I am not sure on that, just know that this thing is like a rocket on the downhills and it is definitely more than just perception.

    Got a few rides in on my new Les (XX1 factory build) this weekend (on flowy desert singletrack). This bike is awesome!!! All I have to compare it to is my 5 year old 26 inch F/S Stumpjumper, my Kona Unit 2-9 singlespeed, and a litany of rental 29 inch Stumpjumpers, Epics, and a Yeti SB95. So maybe part of my infatuation with this bike may be because I've never ridden a carbon hardtail before. Either way, this is by far the best/fastest bike I've ever ridden.

    Ride: A 22 lb hardtail 29er should climb like a billygoat but what blows me away is how fast this bikes wants to go downhill. I don't understand why but this bike feels soooo smooth and fast on the decend. Up, down, or level the bike had way more speed in it than I could give it. I actually felt like I was holding the BIKE back. Wasn't just my imagination either. Got a slug of PR's on Strava this weekend on the Les.

    Fit: I'm a long 6'0" and always land in the middle of L and XL bikes. I went with the L on the Les and it fits perfect. When I set it up and rode it around on the street I thought the stem was too long and the bars were too wide. I also was thinking I had to jack up the seatpost a mile and was starting to think I needed an XL. I was dead wrong. I fits perfect on the trail. The bars are 740mm and I'm still on the fence about them. I'm going to give it another week or two but am likely going buzz them down to 700 or even 680... maybe.

    Build: Absolutely freaking perfect. I've owned about 5 mid-high range bikes and this will be the first one ever that I don't have to mess with. The XX1 is better than even reported. The shifting is super crisp and the 30x10-42 is right on the money for the trails I ride.

    Going into the purchase of this bike I've HATED Avid and Magura brakes. I almost coughed up $500 to slap XTR's on this bike before I even picked it up. Out of haste to just get the bike I didn't and am glad I didn't. After they bedded in, the MT-8's are actually really good. We even had a rare summer rain here in the desert today and they still worked great.

    The Slant Six tires at 700+ grams a pop were on their way out, too but I'm kinda liking them. There are a few sandy washes that we have to muscle through and the Slant Sixes just floated me right through them. I'm also thinking the higher volume of the 2.2's (verses the 2.0 and 2.1's on my other bikes) is adding to some of the compliance I'm enjoying. Grip on our granite trails was awesome, too. Probably gonna leave them alone.

    At 22 pounds I'm happy with the weight but this bike could fairly easily dip down to close to 20 even with lighter tires, pedals (running XTR's), rotors, seat, and seatpost.

    The one only issue I'm having is a creaky seatpost. Not sure if it's because it's new or if it has something to do with the gritty carbon grease on it. Open for suggestions/ideas on that.

    My other question/concern is with the lack of downtube protection. The Les has none. As this being my first carbon bike and being a desert rat this concerns me. Researching options and open for opinions on that, too. Maybe the Les is beefy enough that it doesn't need it???

    So there's my review. You could skip it and read one word: BADASS!

    Agreed! I feel that maybe i am holding the bike back sometimes as i dont want to go that fast in fear that I might eat it.

    Just to add to the phrase. I have had my Les since the spring. Golden bike shop hooked me up and I was told it was the first one in the state. Due to a broken collar bone the bike was actually displayed in the shop for a month with a sold sign on it. I can't say enough about the bike. I bought it as a geared bike because I wanted the option to run it geared or single. I also wanted the Kashima coated fork. Most of the summer I road and raced it as a single speed. I took it to Moab and Fruita and I am continually pleased at how well it descends. The bike is stiff at the bottom bracket and compliant in the seat stays. In August I converted it to a 1x9 and raced the Breck Epic on it. I wasn't surprised at how it climbs but was surprised at how well it descends. Coming from an Air 9 it has been great not dealing with a creaking EBB and it is nice to have a little compliance in the seat stays. Great Bike!

    AZ Stumpy - Sweet rig!

    Check out Gene Hamilton's article on wide bars/short stem on the betterride.net site before you cut those bars. HUGE improvement on handling with this setup. I'm not sponsored by them or anything, but just recently went to this upgrade and WOW what a positive difference after 14 years riding narrow bars/long stem.

    I find it interesting that carbon hardtails are surpassing metal(including Ti) hardtails in the compliance department. I know mine does.

    I gave the 740 mm bars about 6 or 7 rides and never got used to them. Just to be sure I swapped my 685 mm bars from my Kona over to the Pivot for a few rides and it just felt ideal so I cut the bars down to 680 mm. Made a great handling bike even better.

    After two weeks I still love the bike. Other than narrowing the bars a smidge I have't done a thing to it. I re-greased the seatpost and the creak I was dealing with went away. Great bike and XX1 is magical!

    I'm ready to pull the trigger on a Les 29er (M). On paper I have most of the build figured out, only major decision is what travel fork 100 or 120. Can anybody comment on the bike handling differences between these two?

    Hey Gulljammer. I have a Medium Les myself and im 174cm tall just for reference. I started out with a 120mm Marzocchi fork for a few months. The 120mm made the bike a very capable all rounder. I also have a mach5.7C and on my downhill runs I was only a few seconds slower on the downhills with my Les compared to the 5.7C when running the 120mm Marzocchi's. But the front end was abit high for climbs even when the stem was slammed down.
    But the thing is I wanted the Les more for fast XC runs and to smash Strava times with alot of hills. I put a 100mm reba fork with a remote lock out on the Les and now the Les is a rocket. Its way faster now but I cant hit the downhills as hard anymore.
    But thats what my Mach 5.7c is for.
    So if you want the Les as a one bike do it all rounder with very stable handling then get a 120mm fork.
    But if you want the Les as an out right speed machine but still pretty cable on most downhill type runs the get a 100mm travel fork.

    Dano, Thanks for the feedback. I was reading the WMB Les review on Pivot's website; the the author spec'd a 120mm fork for more technical riding and a 100mm for XC. I was looking for a second opinion on his statement, since I am wanting more of an all rounder I will go with a 120 Talas to help on climbs.

    I just picked myself up a nice little orange Les 29er (M) frame. I also got a SID XX World Cup fork to go with it, along with a King headset and a frameskin installed. I will be slowly assembling it in my spare time with a collection of spare parts, mostly XT, and will be borrowing the hoops from my Tallboy LTc for the time being. Can't wait to get some fast rides in on this!

    Is anyone running any extra tape or similar protection on the downtube / bb area, or have been getting any dings or paint chips? Also, anything to watch out for when routing the internal cabling?

    Yeah I got the gloss thin version. My lbs initially had the matte one sent to them but had to return it for the gloss as it didn't look right on the orange frame! It certainly adds some piece of mind having the frameskin installed. I'm just looking for some extra protection around the bottom of the top tube / bb area. I may just go soem heli-tape or something similar.

    I too am 6' (34" inseam) and can't grasp going with the Pivot recommended size Medium especially when, on paper, the geometry of the L is somewhat similar to the L's of Niner Air 9, Santa Cruz Highball, and Yeti ARC-c.
    Did you demo the medium prior to purchasing the large?

    I currently run the short stem & wide bar cockpit on both my Spot SS and Surly 1x9.

    I never demoed a MED but I can't imagine riding a smaller size. If anything maybe I could use a 10 or 20 mm shorter stem but I feel great on the LARGE.

    I finally got around to completing my build and got to take her out on the maiden voyage (3.5 hr ride with a bit of everything) the other day. Awesome bike as I'm sure you all are well aware. I was grinning from ear to ear and yelling and hollering and wanted to join a glee club because I was filled with glee. Thanks Chris and co for delivering such a racebike that is so capable, smooth and fun.

    I'll start it as SS with a XX1 crank or Next SL narrow-wide chainring, don't now yet.
    Like the 156mm Q option on a XX1 crank, the Next sl looks better imo because its also carbon and is lighter...

    Would it be possible to run a Stealth dropper post and use the port under the BB area to feed the hydraulic line internally through the downtube and the seattube?

    I believe it's "possible" but you'd have to modify the access cover plate and use some sort of glue on cable guide on the down tube to keep the cable in place. I need to double check that the seat tube doesn't have any kind of obstruction inside though....

    I'm not running a front derailleur, so instead of running the front shift cable internally, I would use the free port on top of the downtube to run the hydraulic cable through the downtube Šnd the seattube.
    But, like you mentioned, it depends on a seattube without obstacles inside...hence my question.
    The tech sheat talks about 'hollow core internal molding', so there might be a good chance to run a cable thru the BB area-seattube junction.
    I'll have to wait about 10 weeks, time to have all the parts ready here upon arrival ;-)

    Ordered a les Black/blue frame large with blue Pivot headset.
    RF Next SL with DM 32t, PF BB92, X01, SID RCT3 @ 100mm, SDG I-beam+formula FX, easton XC90 carbon wheelset...
    I'll have to wait to the end of march for delivery though...:-( before I can start building the bike up and see for myself about the seatpost.

    That unused port only has a tiny hole in it for the cable to fit inside so you'd be looking at drilling a 5mm hole to fit the housing thru. I'd be hesitant to do that myself since it's not something you can go back from (like if you decide to sell the frame later..)

    However, Thomson released a cable actuated stealth dropper for 2014.
    As soon as I receive my frame I'm going to check the options for a dropper post.

    187cm, inseam 90,6cm, center BB-top of seat 81,5 cm.
    I'm the Long legs, shorter torso and even shorter armlength type.
    Going to use a min 100 or perhaps a 110mm stem with 68,5 cm steerer, still to decide after I receive my frame.

    I have to say I've never risen a hard tail for many year and when I last did I was not a fan of them! I ordered a Mach 6 and I've been riding an Intense Spider 29 Comp for the last year which i thought was an amazing bike for all kind of riding but I wanted a bike just for putting in the miles.

    I changed all my Spider gear over to my LES and it may be a bit over kill with the Fox 34 forks set at 110mm and weights in at 23.7lbs but this bike feels amazing!!!

    Im in shock how fast this thing climbs and how much energy you save, i don't know if this is down to the weigh difference between the spider (3.5lbs) or the fact of no rear suspension? I guess both and others. Its around about the same angles as the spider with a 68.5 deg head angle and a similar length in the cock pit so it feels perfect for me. It descends extremely well and more than capable of gong bigger but its me who lets it down with m lack of hard tail experience and use to the suspension doing all the work
