    Newbie to the Pivot family

    hey guys,

    I just got myself a mach 4 and am loving it! I cant believe how much of a difference it is from my old ride.

    Got a few (probably stupid) questions for you all. I have been reading up on the DW link and see how it is customized to the weight of the rider and his position on the bike. 1) If i am riding with a setback seatpost, would that effect the effectiveness of the suspension? 2) How often do you need to grease the links in the suspension? 3) Any other tips to set up my suspension would be great too..

    you wont need to "grease the links."

    not sure if a setback seatpost changes anything but i doubt it.

    just make sure you run the recommended sag.

    Follow the website to set up the suspension...
    dont worry about the suspension grease unless you hear anything or ride in a ton of water/mud.
    you are going to have a ton of fun, they climb so good the setback is all about dialing in your cockpit...

    Suspension Setup on a M4

    One area I wished there was more information on when I first got the M4 is balancing the front and back suspension. This was not difficult to do, the sweet spot on the M4 is easy to find.

    As the website mentions:
    30% sag in the rear shock with near full fast rebound. Easy to forget the first time around, remember to turn off the Pro pedal when setting sag (lever away from drive train).

    Unfortunately, fork sag is not mentioned in the set up guide.
    Assuming you have the Fox RLC 100 fork, try experimenting with 25 to 28mm of sag and backing off the compression to the lightest setting –blue ring to only 1 click out (clockwise). This differs from Pivot’s setup guide suggestion at compression 5 setting which is a little harsh and does not seem to match the light compression setting with the rear shock.

    The website also has Fox’s recommended PSI chart which seems to be too much for Pivot bikes (which run more sag then other bikes), I would not confuse yourself with PSI and go just with setting sag to 25mm to 28mm for the fork.

    Then set fork rebound to your liking, preferably fast.

    If you ride with a hydration pack, be sure to wear it when setting up your sag
    Because, one is never enough.

    True, I dropped the pressure on my fork 10lbs when I switched to the M4.

    As for the bearings and pivots - I just did a 1 year tear down, clean and lube. The bearings all felt ok for the most part, one lower link bearing was a little gritty. I flushed that one out and its good now. I pulled a seal off every bearing and found they all had very little grease in them. Since they don't run at high rpm and they get wet all the time I packed them with phil grease. Those of you that ride in wet conditions a lot or wash your bikes with the hose set to stun might want to do what I did.
