On the non drive side of bb there is a silver ring that is the same diameter as the spindle on my xt crankset. Am i using the wrong crankset?

Can you post a pic of the BB? The XTR BB we spec on the bike doesn't have any metal ring, it's a composite material.

Yes, a Maverick SC32. It is pretty light at 3-1/2 lbs. It's axle to crown is close to a Fox 120.

If its just a metal ring, you may be able to press it out. I know the Enduro BBs for GXP are just the same as the Shimano BBs, but with that shim added to fit GXP.

    Truvativ

Interesting, I do like running Shimano cranks. I using a cheap Truvativ for the meantime. Would you suggest this tool?

I'd recommend getting a proper BB

I've never done it myself, so no idea on the tool. The tool you linked is for the entire bearing though, and you only need to press out the little metal insert.
