    2012 pivot firebird 650b conversion

Hey guys, I'm considering converting my small 12 firebird to run 650b. I've sold my 26 fox 36 170mm and considering to go 650b, which fork do you guys recommend? I'mlooking at the rRockshox pike or the xfusion. Also what tyres can I run for the rear wheel? The frame comes with the 12 fox dhx air kashima, do I need to mod the shock the accommodate the rear wheel travel? Tia

I have the FB 27.5 straight from Pivot. The only difference is the in house angleset headset they install to slacken the HA by 1 deg and maybe, I have not seen this confirmed specifically, a small shift of the rear triangle brace to make enough room for the largest 27.5 tires. I currently have the 160mm 27.5 Rock Shox Pike up front. I have a Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.35 mounted in the rear. About as tall as current 27.5 tires get. It clears but clearance is about the width of a hair on a gnats arse. It will work. Especially once it wears down just a bit. I'm considering a 2.35 Maxxis High Roller 2 for rear though. Pretty sure it will give me a bit more clearance.

Thanks rehammer, my main concern is the rear tyre clearance as I'm quite particular about the tyre choice if I make the conversion. I already have the cane Creek Angleset but am not a big fan of it as I can't get it to stop popping and creaking 98% of the time. If your pivot specific 27.5 fb have the clearance as you said, I'll worry mine will come out worse. Running skinny xc tires on the bird is a no no and defeats the purpose of the conversion in the first place.

IF they did anything at all to improve rear tire clearance it was only to the rear triangle cross brace and it was very minimal. Maybe they bought a couple mm of clearance. Like I said, I have a 2.35 Nobby Nic on the rear now. Pretty much the tallest 27.5 tire available currently. Tire width is no issue. Its possible you might not be able to run the Schwalbe NN or HD but I bet you can fit any other tire.

As for your Angleset, I know I have seen mention of another fixed angle adjust headset very similar to Pivots. It doesn't have the gimbal interface like the Cane Creek. I forget the name of the manufacturer though. Sure you can find mention of it with some searching though.

Here is a pic of the cross brace on my FB 27.5.

That's pretty tight with the nn. I used to run mountain kings and specialized purgatory controls on my 26" setup. I swear by those tires as it worked great here in my local trails. Still contemplating though. I just added a 2012 specialized stumpjumper 29er fsr to my stable and am loving it so far. I might just sell both bike, sj and fb, and go for the mach 6 if I decide not to carry on with the conversion on the fb. I just can't decide. Damn

I find Conti tires to typically run small. In my experience Spesh tires are pretty true to size but not as tall as Schwalbe. When both those companies finally get 27.5 tires to the market I would bet their 2.35 offerings will fit. That Mach 6 is a sweet bike. Have my eyes on it as well but $3k for a frame is stiff when I already have the Firechicken. How much am I really gaining with the upgrade is my current thinking. The urge is strong for that bike though.

I tried the Mach 6 and although I loved it. I would not trade the bird.

I would trade my mach 6 for a carbon firebird though. And in 650b trim.

I don't think its worth it since the FB is such a capable bike. It would only make it slightly more efficient for climbing.

I have 2.5 Minions and a 170 Lyrik Solo air on my FB so would be not much different then the 650b. The only difference is you could put more efficient pedaling tires on the 650 to get a similar diameter and if that diameter is worth the money then sure.

    2012 pivot firebird 650b conversion

The Neo Moto 2.3 gets great reviews. I'm building my 27.5 wheels now and going with them as a rear tire for my 2010 FB. After a fork swap there will be a HD up front.

i am pretty sure this came up in a previous conversion thread, but i am not sure which one...

but... has anyone tried 27.5"" upfront but leaving the rear at 26", yet?

would running the fox 34 float 160 27.5 end up with about the same geometry as running the fox 36 float set at 170 in 26", everything else being the same?
i need to develop my crashing skills...

Did a conversion on my firebird small to 650b. High roller 2. can't be inflated past 25 psi or else they hit the brace. Great switch so far. I demoed the Mach 6 and would not trade unless i was into racing.
