With that wide angle lens it adds a nice effect.

Panning shots are fun, have to admit most of the time I never think to try it, but this one turned out not too bad:

I'd love hear your setups on these shots as well as the others. Lens, camera settings, lighting, etc.

    They look very good

For those interested.... The shutter is probably around 1/30th for most of my pans..

This one had a flash onboard, you can see the shadow on the wall behind him.

I'd take some exception to the statement regarding flash for those who think it will freeze the wheels etc.....It all depends on flash duration, not flash power. Look at the 2nd pic....The legs are starting to blur with the flash on and they aren't moving nearly as fast as the wheels. The shorter the flash duration, the more stopping power.

Here's a photo taken almost 30 years ago during the 1983 Coors Classic Women's Criterium in Boulder, Colorado. Shot using a Nikon FM (manual focus) using Kodachrome 64 @ 1/30s shutter. I pre-focused on the the line that the riders were following so that on the next lap I was ready to pan and shoot.

EDIT: I tried to upload two images but with every attempt only one image was shown. Is there a secret handshake?

    Missed this post somehow,
I think I got a little better this year
but I use the same equipment, D700, 70-200 2.8, 17-35 2.8, giant pile of strobes.

I've never even opened any of these images in photoshop. The most I ever do is a white balance adjustment in lightroom. Once in a blue moon a batch tone adjustment for exposure. I take hundreds of these a weekend and I don't do this for a living, If I can't process and upload them all within an hour I dont' find it worth doing.

Two from my first attempt at panning at the 2011 US Open:

Wish I had a cleaner background to work with, especially in the second.
