The following pictures are from the Gilroy Hot Springs. The connection to mountain biking? It's adjunct to the 86000 acres and 200 miles of dirt roads and trails of California's Henry Coe State Park. The Hot Springs is closed and in a state of decay, but on this occasion the local mountain biking club ROMP held a group ride, picnic, and campout based out of the Hot Springs. So after all those activities and a long soak in the mildly sulfurous water, everyone hit the tents. I went back and took some pictures in the nearly full moonlight.

At one time the Gilroy Hot Springs was exclusive and widely known. Guests would stay in these cabins. The tarps on top are new, part of an effort to restore some of the salvagable buildings to a small part of their former glory.

    <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_EWRy0DKZteTVd4PZpTSuA?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-69yOwNfprmA/TpJgbE6RYpI/AAAAAAAAENE/ZVU6p3rWvyA/s640/P1040505.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/surlypeach/GHSNightShotsOct82011?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite ">GHS night shots Oct-8-2011</a></td></tr></table>

This is one of the best preserved structures on the property, it is built without nails and the planks are old growth wood. I'm not sure of it's purpose because I was distracted at that point in the history tour.

    <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KEAAxmwf0waUM-ssbBK8yQ?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--nlFkGi5N_4/TpJge8zQBgI/AAAAAAAAENU/PIPg5eEQl6o/s640/P1040509.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/surlypeach/GHSNightShotsOct82011?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite ">GHS night shots Oct-8-2011</a></td></tr></table>

The Hot Springs are a good hike from the gate, well signed as closed, but that does not stop vandals from entering and tagging or experimenting with a sledge hammer. The Friends of Gilroy Hot Springs (Friends of Gilroy Hot Springs) want to restore the site to a operational park, and are looking for a camp host to serve as a permanent resident to deter such damage.

    <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/NrWE8vnQ09bAuUe3HxD_mw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-n-yviW_Fe94/TpJgd_P3bdI/AAAAAAAAENQ/ZrW_rC3GXv4/s640/P1040508.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/surlypeach/GHSNightShotsOct82011?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite ">GHS night shots Oct-8-2011</a></td></tr></table>

A madrone forest stands at the top of the ring road. A shrine is nearby, unfortunately that picture did not work out.

    <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Z0jwyJ-qHuUVME63mH96Ng?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GvP0fw8EvrY/TpJggLvhDHI/AAAAAAAAENY/DKUgijKfbkU/s640/P1040512.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/surlypeach/GHSNightShotsOct82011?authuser=0&feat=embedwebsite ">GHS night shots Oct-8-2011</a></td></tr></table>

About the pictures... The camera is a panasonic g3 with the kit lens. Exposure times are about one minute, f3.5, 14mm, iso 800. For some, I used a flashlight to paint additional light, especially on the "Hot Springs Closed" bathhouse shot. This was my first attempt at long exposure photography. I was surprised how easy it was to get interesting pictures.

Almost-night bike photography.. My flash was a bit hot in a few shots but I had been jumping and saw the sunset and just grabbed the camera and banged off a few shots.. nothing pro but I was happy for under 5 mins of shooting..

almost getting the shot i want. took about 20 this morning before i had to pack it in and get back to work.

wish this shot had me better framed...

    IMG_1207intervale-lights2 by mbeganyi, on Flickr

this shot has the intensity i want on the rider, but the exposure was too short - need longer light trails:

After you have mastered the art of composing, focusing, and setting the exposure, it's useful to ask yourself what you are trying to communicate with the image. They are rather small to go into more detail, I can't read the superimposed text.

Thanks for the compliment! If you click on any of the pictures you'll be taken to Flickr, click on 'Action' and then 'View All Sizes'. When you get to the next page you can click on 'Original' and get them at Full-Rez! Enjoy!

While I was taking this I looked to my left just in time to see the craziest shooting star i've ever seen. It seriously looked like someone blew up a unicorn. The local news station even ran a story on it today

The Sigma 30mm f1.4. I usually stop it down to F2.5 or so as anything below that is a little soft and too shallow. A great general purpose lens that I basically keep glued to my camera.

Very sharp. Some of those Sigmas just beat the others. what body are you using?

i think everybody should put what camera and lense they are using after a photo post!

I'm using a T1i, which serves me very well.

Agreed that Sigma has some quality inconsistency, although i've never received a 'bad' lens, I think it may be a myth! The 30mm is very sharp though, even at wide f-stops (I usually shot at f2.5 or so). A lot of it can also be chalked up to editing.

There are some who say that if canon made the 30mm 1.4, they would classify it as an 'L' lens!

In other news, it finally snowed here!

It's true, never stop trying new things!

That being said, here are my pictures form this week, which are starting to get a bit boring. Time to change things up!

Washington's Hospital Hill night ride group up on the bench on a full moon night. (the little dot on the ridge) I was bummed when I saw the group riding the ridge across the river and I was not riding with them. I still had fun at Hood River's kayak polo in the warm pool instead of climbing over downed trees at night, from our January ice storm.

whistlesglimberg - You have some really nice shots here. Great work! The thought of lugging the bike along, in addition to all of the night shooting gear, hasn't been front of mind, but you've peaked my interest.

In the interim, here's a few recents:

Thanks! My gear is pretty minimal, I just use a Lowepro DSLR Video Fastpack 150, which has worked out great. I just bring my Rebel T1i, a sigma 30mm f1.4, and my small slik travel tripod strapped to the side. I've even got room for an extra shirt/food/whatever.

It's been a few days, sorry for the barrage of images!

If you are asking me. I have an old Pentax K-x DSLR (would LOVE the K-5 but have little money). My lenses are all old manual focus M42 lenses, many Takumars, Super Taks, and some russian lenses. My most used and loved lenses are the Takumar Preset lenses and the Tair 3 300mm Preset. There is just something about Presets that give a very 3D rendering and the huge number of aperture blades (sometimes as many as 20) really give great bokeh.

For the two above shots, I used a simple barn door tracker I constructed from plans found here: A Tracking Platform for Astrophotography | Gary Seronik.com

I was asking you - and if it was your gear you shot with - thanks for clarifying.

I know of a couple local groups that have star-gazing events open to the public - and let people view through their very expensive 'scopes - sometimes let you attach camera-bodies and attempt shots.

If you are at all interested in night photography, I'd really recommend you build a barn door tracker. It is pretty easy and allows for long exposure photography. I haven't shot any night landscapes with it yet but I will soon. Using two images, one using the tracker and one stationary, then superimposing them, you can get great, surreal looking night landscapes.

I'll be taking the barn door tracker to Vedauwoo shortly for some camping and night landscapes. Vedauwoo is a great rock climbing area in southern Wyoming with very different rock formations. Here's a couple of daylight photos I took there last week. It will be a great place to shoot night landscapes from.

That's quality. If you could've gotten that exposure with a shorter shutter so the clouds didn't have so much movement it'd been really eerie.

What was the exposure on that?

One of those "There's no way this will work" shots

But somehow it came out pretty good. Had to act fast as the guy was a bit curious as to what we were doing wandering about before sunrise (looking for a good spot for sunrise photos) but he stayed put long enough for me to pull off the shot.

Not a night shot but it was taken in total darkness. It was done in the basement of the house I was taking some photography classes at.

That Moumnent Valley shot is so cool and this might be my all time favorite MTBR thread. I'll pitch in, this was a couple years back with my old camera and was the first time I've ever tried night photos with it. I now have a new camera and I can't wait to get some night shots with it.

Night in SLC, I rode my bike around to get these shots, so I'm counting it as bike related.
