I want to take some pics of my new bike

Hi gang, I am pretty new to "real" cameras, just treated myself to a Sony a5000. I would love some tips or suggestions on setting up some beauty shots (stills)of my new intrigue. I have been playing with A (aperture priority) quite a bit but I'm really dissatisfied. I think I need to get in closer but if y'all have some tips on angles, what parts make more interesting shots....I'd love to hear ideas.

    Thanks!

Shoot early or late when the sun is low and the light is less harsh. Be very aware of the the position of the sun relative to the subject as well. Typicaly you'll get the best results when the sun is 45 degrees or so off of one of your shoulders.

This is a chart for portraits, but its good for getting you oriented towards what light from different directions gets you. http://digital-photography-school.co...hting-full.jpg

If you're shooting aperture priority, its because you need a certain aperture to get the look you want. Usually that means a very small aperture to get a deep depth of field or a very wide aperture to get a narrow depth of field. Usually that narrow depth would be done to achieve some bokeh.

Nice shots. I really like these sony mirrorless cameras, I have an NEX 5n and an NEX-6 prior to the new naming convention yours follows. I used to have aexpensive DSLR, but these do 90% of what dslar can do but much more portable....although I do miss my big lens that isn't sensible to use with such a small body.

    What lens are you using?

I like to use weird old manual lenses with adapters on the sonys.

The lens that came with it is a 18-50 mm ( I think). What is kind of cool is the dealer just did a class for SONY with two reps for the six of us. Learned lots! I have a friend with a NEX and a ton of lenses that she will loan me.

OK cool. Do you mean the 16-50 (SEL1650)? If so its a nice small portable lens, but I would suggest definitely playing with your friends lenses. Image quality wise the 16-50 isn't great, its OK and makes up for it for being so small, but it doesn't get the most out of your camera.

I am guessing you are shooting JPEG? in JPEG the camera corrects a lot of the issues with the lens (distortion and vignetting), these soon become apparent if shooting raw.

Yep, shooting Jpg. I know about RAW but I don't want to deal with photo processing. Right now I'm just wanting to learn the features more in depth. I do take select shots and (process?) them in Photoshop Element with some adjustments, from slight crops to exposure/contrast, occasionally levels, or auto fix.

Great first attempt and i think you judged the bokeh just right.. if you don't mind, would like to share some of my first attempts at taking pics of my new bike build as well. I might have used just too large an aperture on some shots, so the bokeh is just a little too much i feel. Nikon D300S with a Tamron F2.8 17-50mm lens.

One of the many things they showed me in the Sony class was changing focus options from wide focus to center focus. I think a CF setting would have helped me as I think my desired focal point didn't come out the way I wanted.

thought I had lost this camera, a three year old Sony DSC-W330, but found it today and after a cold 12 mile ride on a really nice smooth paved trail, I thought I'd take a couple shots...
