    wiss and rain?

I am new to riding at the wiss and was wondering how long people usually wait after a rain event to start riding again

There's no simple answer. It depends how hard it rained, how wet the ground was beforehand, how sunny it is afterward, etc. It's not uncommon for the Wiss to be very rideable the day after a moderate rain, but I've also seen it still unrideable even after several days without rain. (Sometimes wet, slippery rocks are actually a bigger issue than mud and erosion, esp. on the Indian side.) And, obviously, different people have different opinions (sometimes very different) about how muddy is okay to ride there.

People often post at the PMBA website phillymtb.org asking about rideability after a rain, so check that out if you haven't already.

    Great advice, OMB.

Sometimes the PMBA guys are slow to update the trail conditions. Another way to gauge popular consensus is to watch the group ride threads on PMBA and see if the group ride is being cancelled (due to poor trail conditions) on the day you wish to ride. Personally, since I do not donate my hours and sweat to maintaining trails (but I do contribute dollars, at least), I give the trails a good 24 hours before I even think about riding. If you have time and want to have a more intimate understanding about which Wiss trails fare better than others after a rain, I highly recommend doing some volunteer trail work this Fall and Spring...if you can manage it.

I rode the Wiss ONCE the morning after a night of rain. Once.

Give it a good 24 hours, but still be prepared to wash bike and reduce life expectancy of drivetrain.

After the recent winds, all the leaves have gone from the trees to the trail. Lots of crunchy leaves to cover up all the rocks and roots of the Wiss. Have fun!

Classic Wiss. The lessons that hurt the most are the ones I learn the best.

Rode the Wiss yesterday. It was a beautiful fall day and yes, all the leaves were on the ground. We had one bent derailleur and some broken spokes but no flats.
