South Mountain Emmaus/VMB Trailbuilding Session Sun 1/13/08 12-3PM

Its the New Year and 2008 will mark the beginning of work on another trail system in the Lehigh Valley. Our hard work at Salisbury has been noticed and we've been asked to design and build a new trail for the South Mountain Emmaus trail system on the Wildlands Conservancy property.
Due to some tough conditions there, namely wetlands, steep slopes and giant rocks there was a need for a new trail to get up to the ridge trail. This has been designed, laid out and approved and we'll start work on this trail this Sunday at 12PM.
If your interested, meet up at the Alpine St. trailhead at 12 PM. We'll hike in and hang a left over to the Cistern trail area.Work to be done includes bench cutting on the slope and rock filling a gulley area.Tools required are picks, shovels, rock bars, etc.
So come on out if you can and help out with our new project! Hope to see you there!

Please note that this date/time may be changed to to weather considerations! Make sure you check bikevmb.com for any changes

This trailbuilding session went quite well! There was a robust turnout and everything we tried to do was accomplished in a banging' way! This included some big benchcutting, gully fill-in rock/tossing and boulder rolling, and a 2ton boulder move with the come-alongs.

Thanks to everyone who showed up.Look for more trailbuilding posts for SME on bikevmb or right here. There may be another session in the next few week, weather permitting.

Do you send PMs to people about trail building sessions?

I just started looking at the PA board, so I missed the 13th, but would try to attend other days. A PM would definitely be a good way to find me.

Thanks for your reply. Actually, we do most communication is on the bikevmb site. There is a scheduler with rides, meetings and trailwork events that are planned. We discussed having a PM thing set up to message interested users but its hasn't been acted upon. Best thing to do for now would be to check out that site. We may do another session sooner than later before the big freeze set in.

Is this area open for rinding now. We used to ride there in the late 80s and then all of a sudden it was closed and strictly enforced. Didn't think that creating MTB trails would be in-line with Wildland's focus.

Can't wait to check them out!

Yeah its open, and will be getting better in the near future. In the past, the was some riding on private property which has stopped. Also, there is a need to re route a trail off of a powerline which everyone rides but it is actually private property. This should be accomplished later this year.

The Wildlands Conservancy asked us to design this trail and we will be designing trails at another location in conjunction with Wildlands.

If you are interested in riding these trails the LBS in Emmaus could help you out-South Mountain Cycles
