Go to Rothrock Outfitters and or Freeze Thaw, rent a Fat Bike, then hit Rothrock. You will have fun.

The Tussey Ridge trail is riding nicely so I would recommend an out and back on that (via Tuxedo/Kettle) and would advise staying off most everything else.

I did a 10mi. ride at Cooper's Gap area of Rothrock yesterday 3/22/14. Roads are still snow covered (really ice since the snow is compacted) in the shadows. The drive in up Coopers Gap Road from where the pavement ends to the first main lot at the bottom of Shittaka is sketchy in some spots due to the ice. Fortunately it was a bit slushy, so traction was fair. I'd suggest 4-wheel drive only until ice is gone. Ride consisted of staying on south face slopes/ridges/gravel roads that get sun exposure. Did an out and back from the lower lot to lower Chestnut Springs and back. Hit some singletrack along the way that was high and dry.

Overall a good ride to just get out and put some miles and climbing in. With cooler temps (highs in the 30s) all this coming week I don't expect conditions to change much quickly. If you know the area well it is possible to put some miles in avoiding snow and saturated sections of singletrack. I'm guessing (2) more weeks before all the snow is gone and more miles of singletrack are rideable.

    Rothrock trail conditions

I'm guessing this coming Sunday-Tuesday is not going to be the best time for a road trip to sample the best of Rothrock...

I was so set on checking out that ridge line trail... Fingers crossed for free time later in the summer.

It will be fine. It's all rock (grippy sandstone) and can be ridden in a downpour.

    Rothrock trail conditions

Thanks, Jeef. Made the most of our limited vacation time. 25 miles and 3,500 ft elevation of hard earned, rocky, swoopy central PA goodness in the rain and fog yesterday. Despite being wet for 4.5 hrs, it was amazing riding and phenomenal terrain.

Road there yesterday. Started off the Tussey Mt. Trail. The conditions were very good. It must dry fast.

Am going through some pics. Here are some from the Tussey Mt. Trail.

Yes. That is a beer tap in the woods. (If only it worked)

I rode Coopers Gap today, it was pretty firm. There were a few muddy spots on Peep Trail and Brush Ridge Trail.
