Listen! "Race" da Rocks at Hunlocks 2013

    Yes, I said "Race"

    Just a brief overview...

...the gracious guys at HCGA Scott, Jimmy, and Ed have finalized approval for a mt bike race in 2013. This thread will talk about, organize, and consume the opening dialog and planning right up until race day.

Our main goals are: To host a race that "all" can have fun at, and add a mt bike race to our list of expanding races/events that our Moto club has been running since 1962.

As for now HCGA, NEPMTBA and a well known guy(who can chime in whenever he feels like it)... Rich...LOL are all on board for putting on a great race for all to enjoy. Those of you who know Rich from the Coal Cracker Classic know he is a great guy and very determined and we totally support his race and efforts!

The race course located near Wilkes Barre Pa, at the HCGA property is fairly new to the mt biking world, and our ever expanding and improving trails have only been on dirt for 2 years. Many of you have never visited the trails at HCGA, being private property it is not open all the time to ride but better still when invites are offered they always come with lots of good times and in 2013 we will continue to have the HCGA Friday night pasta rides as well as pre race rides open to all who wish to join us.

As far as course design we "will not" run you on the Triple Black Diamond trials type sections, but use a designed "race course" containing: Cross Country MTB type Dirt Roads, Dual Track, and Single Track, so a great mix of all will exist as well as lots of elevation changes and passing zones!

Any bike shop, business, or person(s) interested in sponsoring or supporting this race can post here in this thread, PM NEPMTBA, or cr500 here on MTBR, or call Scott Olex at 574-2832

So, now all we need is racers!

More coming soon, any questions gladly answered, please chime in the conversation!

Beard, we'll do some work ribboning the course when the time comes. We'll need a few guys in the woods here and there, but you should race and enjoy the day. That's what it is for, to have a good time.

    Agreed with cr500...
...we want all our friends "to race" if you so choose. This race is for you our locals and others from out of the area to enjoy the day.

Yes, you can still come help and hang if that's your choice. Thanks for your quick response!

HCGA isn't really a moto club. We are a bunch of guys that ride dirtbikes that acquired a bunch of land for us to ride on and do whatever we want as far as playing goes. That ends up being dirt bikes, mountain bikes, shooting, hunting, camping yadda yadda... A good number of us are members of BMER and if you race in NE PA you most likely know or have have raced one of the hare scrambles we promote each year. You will not see a dirt bike race at HCGA, maybe a moto trials someday but no dirtbike races.

This race will be a Mountain Bike XC race that will be coordinated with the Coal Cracker Classic folks in some way. Some kind of a small pirate series or a flavor of NE PA mount biking kind of thing. It's just a way of returning something to the mountain bike community.

    Idea!

Sliding off topic here a bit and not to confuse anyone...
...another event we are considering is a Super D Enduro format...

cr500, As we have spoke about timing systems here's something to look at:
    http://forums.mtbr.com/enduro-super-...ts-806959.html

I like the idea of satellite clocks and transponders, but as you know from District 6 Moto harescrambles transponders can be costly and a hassle. I know Ed B could rough out something since he did such a great job with programing the Moto timing system for our BMER club.

    Well done!

Lots of classes and the Coaster brake class ta boot Woo-Hoo!

If you want help in the next few weeks we should clear the parking area of the poles and weeds, now while the ground is hard and the weeds are dead, we can use it for the MAVT trials also!

    Thanks
    Let me know.

We can use the field for parking. There are plenty flat spots for camping. There are spots up by the well house for the adventurous. Ray is OK with the field. A Sunday morning moon ride and a knobby line for trials on Sunday sounds great to me. I am looking into t-shirts and Jimmy is working on the graphics. I am also looking into moto and bike high-end jerseys with sub-laminated graphics. The jerseys would be special order.

Time to start getting out to the local shops and getting flyers out.

We should clear the side of the turnaround for camping. If we get a thaw we can give Brian's a shot on a Saturday.

Why is this? I mean, if you all like riding moto-x, and promote other races, why not have one on your property?

A question about registration. Is it beginner racer or beginner rider?
Although I have ridden for a long time (definetly no expert) this would be mt first race.

    PHeller,

There are a bunch of issues that eliminate motocross or harescramble from happening at our place. We have very little open land to provide a start area, we have almost no level land to provide parking for the big rigs that come to our other events and we couldnít even come close to handling the parking. The only open land we do have is bordered by to many neighbors to put that much activity in such a small place. A bunch of us are very seasoned at promoting moto events and our place isnít well suited. Being a land use guy Iím sure you understand that not all locations are good for every activity.

    bilbo56,

You have already ridden most of what will be the race course. Everyone will be running the same loop, the only difference will be beginners will do 1 lap, sport will do 2 laps and experts will do 3 laps. I anticipate some pretty fast and strong guys in the expert class but if you want to do 3 laps, I'll keep scoring open till Sunday if you want to take that long to finish, I promise. Hell, I'll even hop in my bike and ride the last lap with you if scoring is all settled down and my wife and daughters want to do awards. Iíll bring dinner out to you on the trail with fresh water too.

A bunch of years ago one of the other owners and I did our first mountain bike race at Bear Creek. We figured we werenít fast but we might as well run the expert class since 27 miles seemed like a great ride even if we were going to come in last. I only did two laps but Ed did all three and they had scoring packed up and were doing the awards as Ed came pedaling up the hill to finish his third and last lap. Everyone just stopped, no one said anything everyone just stopped and went outside and lined the last 50 feet of the loop and cheered him over the finish line. I have raced at all kinds of thing all of my life and will continue to do so till I leave this planet. I have no idea where I finished or what races Iíve done for the most part but I will always remember that race. Ed won that race without question.

Iím pretty sure that at our age the race for me isnít really with everyone at the event at least in mountain biking, dirt bikes are a bit different. If however you really want shoot for the highest finishing spot in a class that offers level competition, you will need to run your first race to see what a real race pace is like and where you stand. Wow, that was a long non-answer.

Iíll give the short answer that I give every first time harescrambler. Think of the first race you do as a trail ride with a few hundred of your closest friends. Get a last place start and run a pace that you know will let you finish. These kinds of races can be long and you will pass pretty much everyone you would have with a first place start. Race your first race to finish because you canít finish first if you donít make it to the end. Ed may have finished last that day a bunch of years ago but he finished and beat me like a drum. Three laps beats two every time

Besides I can change anyoneís class the day of the race if they wish.

Thanks for all your support guys...

...we greatly appreciate it, we always wanted a fun event in the area that we can all gather, race, and share friendships.

    Bill,

Hit up a pre-ride if you can as we will have them in the future.

On your opportunity to race, first no undue pressure on yourself. Have everything ready before hand. sign up ride around to warm up. Maybe a couple jaunts up the uphill to get it all flowing. Show up early for the start, listen to the promoters instructions, find your spot.

That's when the fun begins. Pace yourself in the beginning, concentrate on picking good lines. Walk or run areas you don't feel comfortable attacking, no harm in walking, sometimes it's actually faster. Crashing burns up too much time and harm. If you encounter a slower rider give them a "On your left" and pass clean. Watch the course directions.

Remember you are here for fun!

I have no doubt you will do good!
    I wish you the best!

Thanks Scott. I was just curious, and figured that you guys were making a wise decision. Wish younger riders would understand the idea of "appropriate venues" instead of ripping up someone else's land.

I use to be able to ride a dirt bike in the valley for 5 or 6 hours and never even think of being board or having to head up the mountains as little as 10 years ago. Now you have to shoot from place to place and head right up the mountain with all the land being closed up. It is a shame that the world is changing but it's where we are at. It's so much easier to talk with people if we haven't pissed them off before we need to talk about riding areas. A loud exaust is so hard to get past when talking to people living in an area where people ride followed by trash. I was a huge ass when I was a kid so I can't throw any stones from my glass house.

Scott, cant wait for this. I plan on racing but I will also help you guys get ready (trail maintenance, marking the course off or anything else needed to be done as we get closer). I'll also do my best to get others I know that ride to get them to sign up and race....you have been kind enough to let me ride at your land more times than I can remember so helping you guys get ready is the least I can do....

Scott and I added trail up on top of the mountain, it's a combo of smooth Moto trail with a few neat rock outcrops, and green friendly trail with lots of room to pass and flow. Can't wait for the weather to break to have a preride with all of ya! Scott Olex is doing a great job!...LOL

    Red,

Thanks a ton, and I look forward to seeing you and Rob out this season. We have open rides and we'll have pre-rides so there will be a ton of opportunities. Maybe we can get you out on that KTM. Please put the flyers everywhere you can and we appreciate the help.

This makes me remember Rich's contest from last year for the Coal Cracker Classic. He had a photo contest on their Facebook group for photos posting flyers at local businesses. With that in mind we'll do a similar contest. Whoever posts the most photos of themselves hanging our flyer in local businesses will get a free race shirt. We are still working on the race shirts but if they end up being what I think, you won't be disappointed. They should be modern wicking material with sub-laminated graphics. They should be real nice...

It's late notice but... Jimmy and I are going to do some pedaling at our place today with the dogs, stop by if you are up for a ride. 1pm and shooting up the hill around 1:30 is the goal

    Ds33gt,

We are working on the design as we speak. I need to get to all of the local bike shops to determine all those that want to do some sponsorship and we need to finalize a design. I am hoping to get this worked out soon. If all works out these should be very nice racing jerseys. I would think we will hit the minimum so we should be able to order t-shirts too. These will me modern wicking material with sub-laminated graphics. i am hoping to add them to the merchandising section of the race on bikereg.com. This would allow me to make one order before the race and maybe one after the race for those that decide at the race the want one. We will make a good deal of these but they will be more than cheap cotton T's. I am really hoping these turn out like I am hoping

We'll get there, it's just a race and all everyone really does is go in a circle.

I'll be around the property pretty much all day tomorrow so if anyone wants to ride or work on that 9 section of Kirby stop by. The weather looked decent last night.

I'll check the schedule with my wife and maybe we can have the first official pre-ride of the race loop next weekend. Hope that sounds like a good day for anyone with some free time.

I will do some trail work from 11 to 1 then some riding from 1 till I get board on Sunday. Anyone interested either come on over. Maybe a ride from feature to feature at a pace that leaves the legs to play on the rocks for those in the mood to play and a separate group that wants to hammer? Whatever works is fine with me. It might be time to have my wife make a large batch of sauce, some pasta and some garlic bread?

I am going to be at the property playing on the rocks again tonight. If anyone wants to play on the rocks come on up and join me. I'm not really pedaling tonight other than from rock area to rock area so that I can at on some of the lines. If you like making a clank sound from to time this may be a ride for you.

I will be there around 4:45. No work tonight, all play.

We will do the first official race loop pre-ride this Sunday. The ride will meet at 12:30 and leave at 1. I will be pedaling at a no rider left behind pace so no one will be holding up the group. As always, if you want to hammer I am sure there will be someone that knows the loop that can lead that group.

I will make some sauce and pasta at the end of the rides so this can be a pot-luck too for those that want to stay. The water is on so clean-up should be easy. I will get the pavilion ready for cooking and grilling tomorrow. The back hill up Dirt Rag needs a bit of recovery from some recent work. I will try to get that squared away tomorrow too. We drain very well after rain so with a nice Saturday, Sunday should not have much squish at all.

So come on up this Sunday for the first official "Race the Rocks" race loop pre-ride. It should be a nice day.

    Scott

    Cool-blue Rhythm

    Great day lots of riders...

...from all over joined us in the first tour of the race course.

The day started off a bit early with Jay firing up his Trials Moto and putting on a show while getting in a good workout. The Kirby sections that we ride with mt bikes were turned into Moto Trials heaven for a short time! Thanks to Jay for letting me have a spin on his Factory Team Beta, isn't very often I get to ride a Factory Bike!

Beardman who also showed up early was rid'in the Kirby section like a Mahajraji on a new Magic Carpet, nice to see ya got the whole line clean!

Then it was time to hit the trails, the long gradual climb out of the parking lot was highlighted by stops at technical sections to give everyone a chance to learn the lines. Proceeding up the big back hill on DirtRag trail, and on to the super cool areas of West Virginia, Mono Rock, Angle Straight Angle and 8 Mile, where we finally hit some good downhilling.

Arriving at the big Teeter-Totter everyone gave it a try, before the rock gardens on Hell Froze Over. Knowing the pasta party was calling we took different trails down to the pavilion. Jim and I hit Kirby big mega rocks and survived.

Thanks to everyone who brought stuff that made the party another great hit of eating, hanging out, and telling stories of the days ride. Many thanks to the HCGA landowners Scott, Jimmy and all the others!

I took lots of pics that will be posting up...

4/20/13 please bare with us continuing a little more off topic...
...and we will get back to mt bikes very soon.

We had a Trials Moto day last Saturday where a few friends came to ride some really cool stuff and test their skills on the great Hunlock's Rocks! All of this riding was done where no one would be able to mt bike so just in case your wondering no mt bike trails were harmed. As you can see by the pics these ledges are very steep and slippy!

Fat Dog had loads of fun chasing the Motos and barking his approval at sections where even he got in a few dabs! Good Dog!

Thanks to our friends Jay, Joe, Dave, and Terry for a great day, as well as the HCGA guys!

May be a dumb question but here we go. Is the hunlock race in the same area as moon lake. We would be coming from Mary D (Tamauqa Area). Also may want to come up and ride the area if possible?

    trekgt,

Here's some help and yes we will have another race course pre-ride soon. I would imagine you'll be coming up Rt81 north and you can get off at the Rt29 exit, which will connect you with RT11 this side of the river.

Any questions or help just ask.

I' sure there will be enough people around to put together a Sunday morning rid at Moon Lake. I usually just ride up to the Moon from our place when I sleep out there. I wouldn't be surprised if there a diehard or two that you could convince to do an after race ride. You are welcome to camp at our place and make a weekend of it.

I will be at the property both Saturday and Sunday. I think I will work on the pontoon bridge this weekend. I'm thinking of building it by the red building and then hauling up the sections to the top of the mountain. I will have to run to Brian's mill Saturday morning to get some wood but I should be around the rest of the time. If you want to work on some bad ideas come on up, I will be there. If you want to ride, I am down for another three weeks but I am sure I can send a few out to ride if you stop by.

These are the shirts that Matt Beekman designed for the race. They will be sub laminated, modern wicking material with 3 rear pockets. They will be sweet riding jerseys. I will work on getting them setup and ready for race day. Once I get the final details set-up I will put them up on Bikereg.com in the merchandise section for the race. I will get one order processed for for race day and have them at the race. Anyone that wants one will need to order it and pay for it via Bikereg.com, these aren't like getting cheap t-shirts and I really don't want to own a bunch at the price it will require to have them made up. We will sell them like Jimmy says, "Real nice riding jerseys for cheap".

I will also take orders at the race and if I can meet the minimum, I will then mail all race riding jerseys out once I receive them, just like Rich did at the Coal Cracker Classic when they ran out of shirts.

Hope you like the design, Lee, let me know your size as you and Matt are on me for all you do for us.

Friday looks to be a nice night and I am back on the mountain bike. I am not sure how much I have for the climbs but I'll have no problem pedaling anywhere at our place.

So this Friday night we will put on the first real "Pasta Ride" of 2013. I am sure there will be a hammer group and a no rider left behind group. The new kitchen is pretty close to finished and that will make cooking and cleaning a bunch easier. The usual pot luck should have enough food for all that come by.

Wanna get a look at the race course, wanna play on the rocks or if you just want to ride the single track this Friday should be a good night for all of that. We drain very well so conditions will be fine if the weather channel are in the ballpark with their 10 day forecast.

I will most likely ride again on Sunday, if anyone wants to ride Sunday, post here and we'll see how much interest there is.

Just realized July 27th my friend is throwing his parents a 60th anniversary party and I promised I would help him set up early (7am) and help throughout the day, sadly I'm out for the race.

It was a great ride on Sunday, thanks to everyone that stopped by for making it a good ride.

I will be doing work nights every Thursday night till the race to get the race loop ready for the race. Tonight Ed and I are working on the pontoon bridge and if anyone wants to help just stop by. Anyone that want to help get ready for the race just needs to come up on Thursday's.

Ed, Sam and I worked on the pontoon bridge Thursday night. We have 2 section completed. A few more sections and then we can haul them to the top of the hill and set them up. It should be a wild obstacle. A few more nights work have it done.

I added the shirts to Bikereg.com. If you order a shirt before 6/25 I should have them in time for the race. There is a 4 to 6 week lead time for the shirts and due to the costs I will only be able to get shirts that are prepaid.

cyrus Two totally different venues, the BMER Moto harescramble is held down by the river off Rt11, the mt bike race at HCGA is about 7 miles way in Hunlock Creek Pa. We have our BMER meeting Tuesday, so I will have an update for ya but the BMER Moto HS has been moved to July 14th as far as I know. It was moved due to high water. Hope that clears stuff up for ya.

Yes, you are correct there was supposed to be a Moto trails the next day after the mt bike race at HCGA but the guy who runs it never came through, so kind of insurance misunderstanding.

We will put on a ride Sunday, we meet at 12 and hit the trails around 12:30. There should be a few fast riders that know most of the loop that can lead a hammer ride. I'm a bit slow on the climb yet but I can roll the loop just fine. It should be a nice ride, it looks like the rain might hold off finally and we drain well so it might be perfect Sunday.

Come on out and give the race loop a try. For those that are going to race, please go to https://www.bikereg.com/Net/18397 and pre-register. It will make your and my race day much easier. The race shirts are up on the bikereg page, they are sweet but keep in mind that they have a 4 to 6 week lead time.

For those coming to HCGA, if you have been to Moon Lakes Main Gate directions to HCGA are, from the Main gate at Moon Lake, travel straight on Atherton Rd(dirt road) a few tenths of a mile to the T intersection, turn left onto Hartman Rd.(Paved Rd) follow for a few tenths of a mile, look for a yellow mini bike hanging in a tree on your right side and follow the dirt road straight 50 feet bearing to your right(don't go straight) Mike's house will be on your right. See Yellow gate, travel through the yellow gate to the dead end parking area.

    You have arrived at HCGA...
...home of Fat Dog(dog treats gladly accepted/no hugs please).

The included map is if your coming from Rt81 Rt29 or Rt11

    • Scott Olex You are in charge now, you have the leash it's your goat. If people bring a few marinated London broils we can grill em. If a few people bring some corn we have a huge pot and the new stove. A bag of baking potatoes and they can go on the grill at the start of the ride to be ready when we come off the mountain. A salad and we are set. BYOB as usual. Just write here what everyone will bring and a party makes itself.
