Hey Everyone, My Name is Brandon and I recently upgraded to a specialized hardrock 29er disc so I can enjoy what the great state of PA and the surrounding states have to offer! With that being said I would love to know the best spots for a beginner/intermediate rider to ride within a reasonable drive of York other then Rocky Ridge and Lake Redman/williams since I've been to them both a number of times already.I also would like to find out about any group rides that happen on a regular basis. I also wouldn't mind if I could have some help with finding the best place to get trail maps that I can print off of the internet.
Mt Gretna is good(though best in the summer when the Jigger shop is open for some birch beer ), Camp Mack in the lititz area, and Lancaster Central park, though it is quite small by comparison to the other two. MTG is big on the climbing aspect.
I decided to go on the one of the advanced trails at governor dick today and that was mistake, I'll probably wait on rattling creek then. I need to learn better gear control I'm not sure if contributed to my bike malfunction but I can't use first gear and my chain is bent luckily gung-ho will fix it before I want to ride again because 14 miles at the governor tore me up lol
I almost did a big time endo in one of those areas a while back, flowing along and "oh *** !!!) stop moment but managed to stop in time. Hopefully it won't be too much to fix it
I just got the bike and they said during the first year they cover repairs and since it wasn't like I was mistreating or incorrectly using the equipment I fully expect them to do just that.
Codurus is another park in York county with mountain bike trails.
There are mountain bike trails around Loch Raven in Northern Baltimore county. Probably not worth driving down from York for, but if you were headed South anyway they can be a nice ride. Take Dulaney Valley road north from the (Baltimore) beltway (exit 27b) until you get to the intersection with Seminary ave. Park along the North side of Seminary, just West of the intersection with Dulaney. To get to the trails, go East on Seminary, cross Dulaney, and look to your left (which is North if you're doing it right). The trail is easy to spot.
All of the rest of these are still within 2 hours unless you hit traffic, and are often mentioned as excellent riding spots:
White Clay in Newark, DE. Fast and flowy with lots of short hills, no long climbs or descents or anything extremely technical (that I found, I was only there once). There were some optional lines with skinnies that I passed on. Lots of miles of trail here. I didn't enjoy the drive, but the park itself was a lot of fun and a great change of pace from Rocky Ridge.
Schaeffer Farms in Germantown, MD. I haven't gone there yet
Patapsco state park in Elkridge, MD. I haven't been here either, but I want to head down to check it out. It's often mentioned as being one of the better places to bike in the Baltimore-DC metro area.
Thanks for info! I've heard a lot of good things about white clay creek so I think I'm going to make that my next destination one of these weekends. I've also read a lot of good things about scheaffer farms as well. I ride at rocky ridge on an almost daily basis because it's so close to my house. If you ever need a riding partner or would want to tag along with me on an excursion to one of those trails out of state that would be cool. I don't know many people around here since I'm not from the area.
