REI and FOW Celebrate National Trails Day

Both REI and FOW encourage everyone to join them on National Trails Day on June 3, 2006. This year, REI and FOW will be working on the trail intersection on the Roxborough side of Wissahickon Creek, opposite Kitchen's Lane and below the golf course. Interested volunteers should meet at 9:30 a.m. at Magdelena Street and Roxborough Avenue, and then follow signs directing volunteers to the site. The organizations plan to work until 1:00 p.m.

REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) was founded in 1938 as a consumer cooperative to purchase high-quality outdoor equipment for its members. During the past six decades, REI has grown into a renowned supplier of specialty outdoor gear and clothing. Today, it is the nation's largest consumer cooperative with more than 2.8 million members. REI annually awards conservation grants to organizations nominated by employees and all of REI’s stores routinely coordinate outdoor service projects that bring together members, employees, and volunteers from a variety of organizations to improve local outdoor resources and foster a stewardship ethic among local community members.

For eight years, REI of Conshohocken has joined the FOW on its monthly workdays in the Wissahickon section of Fairmount Park, where they have helped with projects such as clearing trails and removing invasive plants. “Access to outdoor resources in large cities like Philadelphia is often limited,” says REI Store Manager Matt Bergerson, “and we are fortunate to be able to partner with an organization like FOW that has been so successful in supporting maintenance and access in the park.”
