Idea! Moon Lake Workday 11/3/12 All day Saturday

Moon Lake workday to clean trails after Hurricane Sandy...

...All day Saturday, removing debris, cutting downed trees, blowing leaves.

If you Ride da mOOn trails and have never attended a workday this would be a great time to do so. The park is open all day Saturday, and the Blue Barrels going up to the campground are open, so you can drive close to the trails you wish to clean.

Bring whatever you have, leaf rakes, leaf blowers, chainsaws, hand saws...
    ...your trails thank you!

There are some things that don't work or are disjointed on trails but for the most part it's the rider that makes a trail flow. You just have to figure out the line, speed and gear selection to get to the flow. If all there was to makin a trail flow was pedaling as fast as you can it would be pretty boring pretty soon at least for me it would. Riding is a puzzle that needs to be figured out some of the time

    That's my useless two cents...

Seemed more like $.05 Scott! Murph, Justin and myself cleared NW 1&2, upper 5858
From Salamander to Deacon. Deacon, Ledgview, 8, T Rex 1&2 not the bottom though. Also Murph got the bottom of Edge.

    Agreed...

...HCGA needs a flat out total log infested trail, that has a sign at the beginning saying: "If your a Roadie or a Whining Pu88y turn around wipe your A88 and go home. The section in front of you is IMPOSSIBLE to RIDE"

There will soon be one like this at "Jaysburg"

Mainly leaves. Some salad, there were only about 5 trees down on those trails.

Sorry Josh! All I could think about was how Justin was missing out on the fun. Lots more to do though.

Just to split a few hairs: there exists some land south of 29 (which runs east-west as it passes north of the park) and north of 'da Moon that is open to hunting. If you see the orange bands on trees while you are cruising 8, that's the line. So, some of 8 borders immediately on hunting area; a "lot" of 5858 is on legal hunting ground. You can usually tell if a hunter is parked in that area.

I've only come across one hunter in that area in the past two years.

    Best,
    Mark

PS I was curious about this since I had only heard it verbally. The best evidence I could come up with was page 2 of the Moon master plan document which has a map of the park with a gap between the park and 29. Assuming it is accurate, many of the trail on the north side of the park are outside of the park boundaries. I'm not sure who owns that land. See here:

    Addition...

Moon Lake park "is" surrounded by private land owners.

When the trails were built I was told by the park manager that local hunters have always hunted down towards the flume, and it was water company land.

Boarding NFS is Ken Pavlick's land

I have run into hunters very few times, I spoke with 2 both were locals and said they knew all about the Mt biking at Moon Lake.

Doesn't seem to be a problem.

Please don't turn this into a "hunting" thread...

Justin, Josh and I put some work in tonight. Big Blue and Twister are leaf blown, salad cleared and any downed trees cut.

Trees also cleared from Buddy's, Slide, JKE along with small branches but they were not leaf blown yet.....the first pass of the year for Big Blue and Twister took almost 3 hrs since there were a ton of leaves and they were soaked.

Ed B. and I are going to meet at our place at 8am tomorrow then we'll run up to Brian's mill grab some wood for the new skinny section and give the cutoffs pile a look. If the cutoffs pile looks ripe for some pickin' we grab what fits and figure out a day to get back up that way.

Depending on what my daughters are interested in I should be able to get to the Moon in the afternoon or just work at our place.

I'll try to get by the Moon after work today if I can slip out a bit early.

Gates have not been open all week. I plan on being there around 9 myself. I hope they open them tomorrow. Will make it much easier to drive into the park to clear trails.

Rode Mo-Zee tonight and there are a couple of downed trees and a ton of little branches on it.

CR500 nice job with Watkins, Going Up and ET tonight...saw your truck there tonight

I beleive Kuhl Kat got 5-Tree and some of Nightmare cleaned off...

I knew the park was closed the day the courthouse was closed. The workers are done as of 10/31/12, but spoke to Gene and he didn't say anything about gates closed for the season! I'll find out

I started clearing 5 tree where it branches off of big blue. I continued up nightmare and kept going on 5 tree. with about 30 yard of trail left, i ran out of gas. It was slow going, the blanket of leaves are thick and wet in some places. I think today, a good old fashioned rake will come in handy.
