Half-price 7 Springs this weekend (their last), 10/25-26

Weather permitting, I'll be there. I feel like I need one more day on that mountain before I head to Diablo the next weekend for their season closer.

    So who's going?

No hijack, the weather is going to be the deciding factor for me, too. Saturday is not looking good, but Sunday may be alright. Forecasts from both the Weather Channel and Accuweather are saying "chance of showers" (20%).

I'm gonna play it by ear and see what it looks like on Sunday morning.

I can't go on Sunday. What about Diablo? They are much further east, and it is my understanding that the storm is coming from the west. BTW, is diablo-ween crazy time? Or, aside from the costumes, is it more or less a regular day of riding. Back to 7 Springs, it has been my luck the past few times I have been able to go I haven't due to precipt. My luck I guess, would love to go though!

    Google is your friend Datalogger.

I'm planning to be up there as well this weekend. Hopefully we get lucky with the weather. We found some deal a while back and decided to throw down on a hotel. It's non-refundable, which I'm beating myself for now. Oh well. Forecasters are wrong half the time.

I'm coming up from Philly. If anyone else is riding solo or looking for someone to ride with, PM me and we'll hook up. I've never been out there before, but looking forward to it.

    That'll work. Thanks.

I could find this site because I've been here before and have it bookmarked. I searched for Diablo first and was not getting any pertinent info. 7 Springs did turn up rather easily though.

Ok awesome. It's a 2.5 hour drive, I just want to be prepared if I go.

Are their rental bikes worth the $, or should I take my Durance (5" rear, 6" front) that is geared towards XC/light AM?

    Thanks guys!

7 springs is fun, but is easy! You can make the trails as exciting as you want, take your durance, you DO NOT need a DH/FR bike for 7 springs.

I agree, a 5" bike is plenty. I would consider renting a full face and knee/shin/elbow pads though. You will be riding fast and crashes are bad enough to warrant some protection beyond an XC helmet.

I'm hoping to leave here in a few hours to drive up. It's currently 37* up there, and the forecast is calling for a scorching high of 57. Should be fun!

i was there when they opened the lifts saturday and rode for 3 or 4 hours alone in the rain before anyone else showed up. even in the pouring rain it was totally rideable. it was muddy, but since its all clay and has been ridden hard all year the trails were still nice and firm. really the only issues i had were one turn in super con that wasnt banked and i kept drifting off the trail on if i kept up enough speed to get up the rock feature right after it and one of the berms on lower 007 (the first one after rock n roll merges with it) that had a pile of wet leaves right in the line i wanted to take. walking around the resort completely caked in mud was pretty funny. all the leafers there for autumn fest were completely bewildered (well most, a few realized that dirty=fun)

i do wish i owned goggles though.

I made the trek up and had an absolute blast!

Something I did notice was that a 120mm stem is WAY too long for downhill. Haha.

My tires turned into one big slick as soon as I hit the the mud towards the end of the run. I thought about swapping out my front Larsen TT (many small knobs-designed for rolling efficiency-not mud) for a 2.35 Kenda Nevegal that I had in the car-but didn't want to lose time that could be spent riding, and I had just topped off the Larsen with tubeless sealant and didn't feel like dealing with the mess involved. I noticed I also don't have near enough rebound damping in the rear for the big jumps. I dropped the air pressure to around 180 (usually 220-230 for climbing) but the rear end was still kicking off some of the big tabletops, especially the two at the bottom.

Both of these issues are ultimately what resulted in my massive wipeout at the end of the day on the second of the two tabletops down by the lift. As I approached the second big jump I was trying to correct my line a little to the left, but there was so much mud in my tires that nothing happened. The rear kicked up and I landed front tire first off to the right of the course-right on the steeply cambered muddy slope. The front tire instantly washed out in the mud and I slid on my right side back across the course before popping back up looking like I had just taken a mud bath.

    Definitely a good time!

I don't know if any of you guys saw me, I had on blue Under Armour shorts, a black skull T-shirt, and since I had an open face helmet (and was swallowing alot of mud) I put my skull bandana over my mouth for the ride down. I also have a mohawk. I may have stuck out a little. Lol.

Thanks for starting this thread PCinSC, I never would have known about 7 Springs otherwise!

I think I saw you at one point, unless there was more than one guy using a bandana as a mud guard.

So who's up for Diablo's closer next weekend...should I start another thread?

if you were the one with the skull faced bandana, i saw you there. i was in line behind you a couple times, i had a silver 04 big hit and a red helmet and one of my friends was on my blue trek fuel and the other on his 08 big hit (the brown and tan one). it was my first time there and it was great! i will definantly be going back next year and possibly be buying a season pass.

Yup, I was the weird looking guy with the skull bandana! Haha.

I just noticed I dented my downtube when I wiped out yesterday. Sorta pissed about that. I'm tempted to buy a cheap used bike just to take up there that I wouldn't care if I smashed up. Until yesterday my Durance was nearly mint with barely a scratch. It was still worth it, I can't wait to go again!
