Cedar Bike and Paddle Lackawanna State Park Rides
4/11/13
I had an opportunity this past Thursday to attend a ride hosted by Cedar Bike's owner Chaz Ross at Lackawanna State Park. Lackawanna SP is one of my favorite trail systems. We started off from the boat launch heading towards the dam which was at full flow outflow from the past rains. Onto Northwoods trail, a great tech slippy trail to get us on our toes right away. We rode all of the good trails passing Trostle pond, Orchard trail and finished with the tough climb on Turkey Hill at that point darkness fell on us and we finished with our lights just in time to keep on good standing with the ranger.
Thanks for the fun!

Another great Cedar Bike and Paddle Thursday night ride at Lackawanna State Park.
Ride had 2 separate groups, Laura, Scott, Rachel and Chuck B. joined myself for lots of fun climbing and descending on Turkey Hill, Lee, Kennedy, and Abington trails, as well as others.
Ride commenced with good conversation in the parking lot, as darkness rolled in, and talk of after ride cookouts later this summer planned!
Below is a scary item from my GPS track, my carcass hauling on the mtb at 34 mph on dirt...LOL
516 4/18/2013 7:20:23 PM 1248 ft 50 ft 0:00:01 34 mph 221° true N41 34.143 W75 42.233
Thanks CB&P another fun night!

Hello, are these group rides open? The photos look great and I am looking to find a few new areas to ride. I have a potential project starting up in that area and I would love a reason to bring the mountain bike along.

Yes, by all means jump right on in and join our group of friendly people. These rides have 2 levels, one ride is for slower, more beginner type social loop less than 10 miles whereas the other is a harder, longer, faster more aggressive ride. Both rides have leaders and no one is left behind! You can contact Cedar Bike and Paddle bike shop for more info.

The rides grow every week, this week more riders and more mileage. Longer daylight and more sun for fun. Trails are in great shape!

Not even on and off rain could dampen the spirits of the largest group of riders yet to hit the trails at Lackawanna state park on this night.
Another fun loop this time serious climb up to Conservancy property in honor of Scott's birthday(one more hill...LOL) Then the descend and roll into another hill and descend again, riding over 7 miles, of slippy rock and roots sharing good conversations with all who attended.
Brad had the Fattest Bike of all, and the best color combo, even the Red newt on his stem
Of course our 2 "big guys" were the hit of the night, not letting anything both them they rode like champs!
Thanks Cedar Bike & Paddle
Lots of pic coming

I rode the new improved section this past...
...Thursday night. After a day of rain on Wednesday it was dry and open with no more mud puddles!
Our workday paid off
Thanks to all who helped make this happen!

The big last ride of May 2013...
...was the largest group yet and even 90 degree weather and humidity could not keep them away!
Better than 15 in the social ride group and 7 or 8 on the hammer and another beginner group with 3 or 4 in the park tonight!
Turkey Hill, Ranger, Lee Hill, Bassett
Fun stuff...
...see ya in June

DR6: click here for driving directions
At least if they're starting from the south side.
To get to the north side parking just continue on Abingdon across the lake and take that 1st left into the park.

Chuck, Sorry for the late response riding my bikes way too much...LOL Rides start in the main parking lot north side of the park, after you make the left into the park at stop sign hang another left, boat launch will be straight ahead, continue left. It is a big oval, mt biker parking is along the grass nearest the lake, we help the ranger and keep the middle grass open for trucks with boat trailers. Rides start a bit after 6PM, usually between 5 and 8 miles with breaks and regroups at intersections, climbing involved.
-
Thanks Lee
Might try and make it this Thursday since I'm not sure what the weekend has in store for me.

6/20/13 How many bears does it take to make 20 mt bikers turn around and go back where they came from? "Two" Well I was cool with the 350 pounder, but when I saw the 500 pounder that was enough for myself and everyone else to just "LEAVE" These bears were very comfortable with all the mt bikers, and didn't budge one inch! Gotta respect their domain.
Oh ya! We did have a great ride at Lackawanna on the longest day of the year! Super weather! We had 3 new riders, Ethan, Kevin, and Shawn, plus about 35 other riders!
I'll get the pics up from tonight's ride in a day or so...
...check back, thanks!

Ok, I am surprised no one has asked so far but...since some friends and I are riding LSP today (6/21) I was wondering if you happened to notice what part of the trail the bears were on?????
Obviously they could have covered the whole park by now but at 300-500 pounds they sound like they are not big on the whole strava scene and have likely found some good food sources to hang around. Also, it may be mating season and I have no desire to be involved in interruptus of the ursinus coitus so to speak!
Thanks!

Thanks. Interesting enough, friends of mine came upon a mother and cub up near the power lines a summer or so ago. They had accidentally disturbed a bee's nest and then noticed the bears (probably amused by this whole spectacle) watching them! Needless to say, they got out of there asap!

Little help on this one guys amd gals. lthough I ahver been living here fo a bit, I had never been to Lackawanna to ride. I did not realize how close it is to my house. With all the road construction I find it a bit frustrating trying to make my way up to the moon for an after work ride some days. So, long story short. Where is the best parking for an after work ride. Where is the trailhead from the parking lot if not obvious. lastly I see they close at sunset is there somwhere i can park and not get locked in if I am running late?
Basicly, fill me in on this place the dcnr map is a bit confusing.
-
Park at the main boat launch in the park, from there you can access all the trails, a good loop from there in the main parking lot is to cross the paved road onto Orchard trail and head out that way towards Troxel pond... Grab a state park map and follow that.
Lackawanna has a lot of nice riding and trails give yourrself a chance to learn all that is there.

any issues with the park if you get back to the lot after sundown. Even with a watch and a map I tend to get lost or loose track of time.

There is no night riding in any state park in Pa! They do watch at Lackawanna

FWIW,
The Tues AMP rides at Francis Slocum SP are DCNR approved for night rides (through 2025 - just finished the paperwork) - but you do have to be participating in the AMP ride, it's not open for general night riding, just like Lee shares.

The same goes for Swatara SP with SAMBA sanctioned Tuesday rides, and I THINK RB Winter SP / BEMBA.

I can say we have been late a few times getting out of the woods at Lack and the ranger wasn't too happy!

I haven't seen anything on DCNR's website, but according to WNEP, Moon Lake will be State Forest, which has very limited restrictions, and night riding is permitted.

Oh thank you! That made my day. Its been bothering me for several months now but finding answers has been less than forthcoming. I know with the "state park" label there are way different rules that would have been hard to swallow. Like the close at dusk/ no night riding, dogs on leash, hunting ect ect. I know the Moon is a haven for many mountain bikers and most (myself included) have enjoyed the lax rules, and accepted the extra responsibility that comes with that type of freedom.
-
I think Moon lake will benefit, remember the county had no money, so the state will get Moon lake stable and protected with a system of rules that are standard.
