Idea! Big mOOn Ride 8/4/12 Saturday... Eveyone welcome!

The Biggie Ride da mOOn for da year...

...I have had a few friends who would like to come join us for a great ride, so never rode da moon? Or a long timer vet come join the ride!

    Meet: at Main Gate
Please arrive early to get ready
Ride at 12 Noon,(15 minute grace on dirt at 12:15)

Length: Ride will be longer, using NFS, 5858, Salamander Deacon!

Pace: moderate, 2 to 3 hours of trail time, depending on size of group.

Rests: we will stop, wait for the group to reassemble at points. We don't want to loose anyone!

Halfway Stop: a longer rest stop, I will place a cooler with ice/water at that point, if you would like to put your own cooler there, or bring water drinks feel free! This will be at the upper parking lot by the Marina (aka the Big Stinky Uphill, see on map)

One thing you can count on is da mOOn has lots of very friendly local riders that care and will help out to make sure everyone has fun, and of course I cannot thank them enough!

Please be responsible, wear helmet, safety gear, and hydration!

I have posted a map of the route:

Hmm, it's almost a 2 hour drive from Dingmans Ferry but I think I might be able to make it that weekend.

Just want to confirm...I've never been there before and I'm a beginner / pretty slow. I'd still be welcome?

    blood, Yes...

...by all means your welcome to join and the cool thing about mOOn is there are bailout reroute points all over, so you can skip and jump ahead or just bail if your OK with that!

We don't drop anyone on our rides, and that is one purpose of this ride is to give noobs and first time visitors a chance to enjoy the trails!

My wife and kids are going to be out of town visiting family that weekend, so I'm in like Flynn. Really looking forward to it after all of the pictures and videos I've seen.

    Great...

...I'm very impressed with the way your riding has steeped up, on this past Wednesday night ride you were in the zone smashing and thrashing pedals as if you were being chased by a Mad Hairy Rabbit...

...wait, that was "me" behind you... LOL

    Excellent...

What's the best way to get there if I'm coming South on 81 from Scranton / WB?

Take exit 164 onto Hwy 29, towards Nanticoke
Stay on 29 and cross over the river, towards W.Nanticoke
Stay on 29 as it joins Rt 11 (left turn) - if you find yourself entering Plymouth you went the wrong way,
At the stop-light just after the bridge and Banko's, turn right onto Hwy 29,
About 4m later, just after you pass the reservoir (on your right), turn left onto White Oaks
( there is a sign for MLP here, on your right, just at the intersection)
Stay left onto Atherton rd where White Oaks curves to the right, there is a sign for MLP in front of you
A bit over 1/2 mile later the entrance to MLP will be on your left

    Wink

Pike's Creek construction is paving Rt 29, but shouldn't be any problems.

I will add a driving map with directions after lunch today.

    Idea!

These two maps are after you exit Rt 81

Map 1 is through Plymouth on Rt 29

Map 2 is to continuing on Rt 29 to Moon Lake

The distance is about 6 miles from Banko's even though the sign says 4(God Bless PennDot, must have used a "crow" to measure distance back then... LOL)

A Landmark to look for as you get close to Moon Lake is Ceasetown(Pike's Creek) reservoir on your right, at that point your only a feet hundred feet from the left turn at the Moon Lake Sign(on your right)onto Moon Lake Drive.

Thanks everyone, especially Lee for organizing the ride and setting up the cooler of ice water! I had a great time and learned a lot. I already can't wait to do it again.

BTW, I'm the guy from Dingmans Ferry with the grey Dawes bike.

    Good job!

I really wanna thank "everyone" for a super ride day...

...gathering to do these rides are pure pleasure when so many great people hit the trails. I'm glad we kept everyone safe and having fun and sweating on those uphills, and air conditioned on the downhills!

Nice to meet all the visitors, ya finally got to Rode da mOOn... and thanks to locals for helping take care of everything, you make all this possible. I hope Shoe, Buddy, and Barney had a good hike!

One of the best was Joan riding single speed getting the "I'm not worthy" from Peter... LOL She can really crank that SSer...

To0Cat, thanks for the pics & screaming... LOL Good Stuff! Sorry the Ice Cream truck doesn't go by da mOOn!!!!!!!!!

To all, we will do it again soon!

Good to see the Kuhl Kat crew!

    pics will be flowing in...
    ...thanks again

What a blast to ride there, well worth the 2 hour drive and will be back in Sept. NEPMTBA,RRHINES still can not believe that was only 7-8 miles wow i would have bet a $20.00 that was like 15-20 miles. How about Buddy123 rocking the SS and the ride ending before the down pour. The knees are still sore from the handle bar to knee marriage on NFS was going to ride today but think some rest is needed.See you on the next ride PS thanks for the water

Perfect day. Thank you for taking the trip to visit the Moon. Great to see everyone. Big thanks to Lee was hosting the ride and taking pictures. I am glad that everyone had a great time.

Please take a trip back soon, We promise that we will take you on "one more hill".

PS. I found Shoe, Buddy and Barney by the marina. I guess his phone was in a "dead spot". So, I had a nice road ride too

Buddy123 rocks, so long as she doesn't dehydrate. But that should be a thing of the past now. ;^)

As to the mileage thing ... I moved up here in July '09 and I kept doing rides at the perceived-effort level of the 15-20 miles from my previous home (Austin TX) and looked and saw that I had some-times bust 10 miles. I was quite frustrated, as it just wasn't the mileage I was accustomed to! It took a while and one visit back to TX to confirm that it actually IS significantly more effort to ride these trails than what I was on previously.

It's not that any one thing is more difficult, it's just that it NEVER SLACKS OFF. Stupid rocks. Stupid roots.

Yup, Over a 400 foot drop in less than 3/4 of a mile! That's why it's called NFS= Not For Sissies! Notice you climb all that on the way back up on a more spread out scale though, we can always do it backwards next tine and descend 5858 then climb NFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks lufubar for showing us the "fear & pain" in a nice graph... LOL

Fun ride - a week late but here's some photos... Nope. Guess mtbr doesn't like my Mac. Anyone know what this error message means?:

I will never forget this group ride, since it was my first real mountain bike ride. Rode 8 miles in something like 3 hours and it kicked my butt. Almost 3 years and several thousand miles later, and I can't believe how far I've come as a rider...both skills and fitness. I've since moved away, but I hope I can get back to Moon Lake to ride again some day.
