Yukon Ho - a 9,000km roadtrip through Northern BC and the Yukon

Stuck this in here because at some point, we did get on our bikes.

More here - Yukon Ho – Inside Passage BC Ferry – Yukon and BC Mountain Biking Road Trip | Sharon and Lee - Just another day

    Overview:
Our 10,000km journey started with a desire to drive the Dempster Highway in the Yukon. Wed hiked the Tombstones so had a taste of the beauty of the Yukon vastness. What better way to feel that depth then with the freedom you have driving your own vehicle. We had bought a reliable truck, our Toyota Tacoma just for such journeys.

Since we were going the distance we decided to make this a road trip to remember by getting a taste of what BC and the Yukonhas to offer. The first stage is the drive up Vancouver Island to hop on a BC Ferry to experience the Inside Passage. No better way to see our coast line then on a 15 hour cruise along it. Once at Prince Rupert we headed North on the Stewart Cassiar Highway which ends at the Alaska Highway. The Stewart Cassiar was built in the 1960′s to open mining south of the Alaska Highway in BC. We then continued to Whitehorse where we overnighted.

This is the Inside Passage Ferry portion where we go from Vancouver to Prince Rupert via BC Ferries

The weather was moody on our Voyage, more sunny then overcast so we had some pretty stellar views of the happenings that happen on the ocean. Graham Reach

Next leg - we drove up the Stewart - Cassiar. What amazing ski terrain. Not much bikeable here except for logging and resource roads. So much wildlife too. So few people. Dease Lake is the "biggest" town there and we basically blew right through it

After getting to Whitehorse we started up the North Klondike Highway through Southern Yukon and to the Dempster Highway to Northern Yukon. Lots of driving and sitting on arse. Not a lot of biking/hiking or outdoor activity yet. Maybe this is how most people spend their vacations. Guess its good to have other experiences.

Actual riding commenced when we tried two trails in Tombstone Park. One that worked was Goldensides which was a great, if short ride on a trail. Another that didn't work was Surfbird which was melting permafrost tussocks. It's always interesting trying exploring new areas where there's not much information

We drove through Windy Pass and I scoped out Distincta Ridge as a possible ride but the time commitment to do that would have been a bit much so we headed further north to Eagle Plains, the Artic Circle and the Rock River campground. Wow - the terrain gets pretty spectacular as you get to the Richardsons

Offers great views, the bend in the River is where the Campsite is.

Up a bit higher to get some more vert.

Fantastic pics and glad you had a great trip. When I was a kid we'd watch the Northern Lights flash by and shoot up to the heavens. What a great experience!

Got up the next day to overcast skies. Found out that some terrain doesn't work well for biking but does for hiking and scouted out a potential bike ride for the next day. Spectacular terrain in the North West Territories and Northern Yukon and by now the colours are off the scale

Weather went to poo which annoyingly scrapped plans to ride ridgelines. We bolted for Dawson City. In the last five days the green of the alpine tundra had turned to yellow, orange, red, pink. Yukon has spoiled us for fall colours

The Top of the World Highway is a 301km highway from Dawson to Tok, Alaska. It was built in 1955 after being used since the gold rush as another gold rush mining, transportation trail. Its so named since it is one of the highest roads in North America and, to avoid muskeg and permafrost, was built on ridgelines and avoided valleys. Its only open in the summer until the reaction ferry at Dawson can no longer cross the Yukon River, which ices up in winter.

There is not much along this route. The only town is Chicken Alaska, where we ate lunch. Its a nice drive as a longer alternate to get back to Whitehorse via linkup to the Alaska Highway.

We overnighted at Tok then continued on to spend a couple of days in Haines Junction back in the Yukon where we enjoyed Parks Canadas very understanding and liberal policies on mountainbiking. We also took in a glacier overflight of the Kluane Icefields

From the Yukon we headed south to Northern BC. By no means was this crowded. We'd still go 100s of kms on the Alaska Highway without seeing houses but there was certainly more wildlife. Our friend Tyler talked us into spending some time in the area and we certainly didn't regret it.

We finished our road trip by riding some trails in Stone Mountain Provincial Park in Northern BC then headed back to Vangroovy. Whew - not sure how people do non-active vacations. This was about as much driving as one can imagine broken up luckily with quality outdoors recreation

Awesome trip! Wish I can do something similar someday. Did you tent camp or only stay in hotels/b&b's?
