Well, a whole host of reasons, really, a crusher lack of snow among them for the snowboard side. I do have a kickin' little shop for sale, in the heart of the Tetons (Idaho). I can PM anyone details if interested. This is a booming town, and this could be a very good opportunity for a passionate soul. Sorry if this is a bit 'spammy', I just thought it fit on Passion right now...

One, I am starting a business in Peru. (think BIG Mt. Bike trips)
two, my wife and I want to have a kid, (I'll be the 'stay at home')
Three, I am starting a job as a local trail building consultant,
and fourth, I have owned it for seven years, and it's just time, if that makes sense.
We have worked really hard establishing the local cycling cuture, promoting races, building trails, and generally advocating any and all two wheeled mayhem. I have worked in shops for 23+ years now, I guess I want a taste of some other reality.
Hope those are compelling enough reasons!
I believe if I had not gone in so deep on winter, (and focused more on bikes and internet sales) I would still be into it. As a result of this weird winter, I have reflected, and simply want to start the next chapter, as it were. We do really well on the bike side of things, crazy as that sounds.
Whistler is off 12% and the snow is more like rock. As an avid skier I still haven't been up, same with Craig H moderator here, and Alan B who owns a place there has been infrequently. And I hold passes that are paid for.
In addition, I know the most successful Norshore shop dropped boards about 3 years back. Margins were too low and the market/shoppers all wanted stuff below cost. They dropped snowboards/clothing etc. and focused only on bikes. Last year they doubled floor space, and this year added more warehousing space. I guess boards are a bust.
The trail system would be to create more percieved value in not just trucking up to it to ride, but for the inevitable condo/house sales that will be happening soon. Fact is, Boomers are riding mt. Bikes, and want trails. At least this is very different from the old refrain, "there are houses going in, and they are destroying all the trails!"
This is a much better solution for all of us.
So, wanna buy a shop?
Whistler wasn't too bad before the monsoon hit in January. Mind you it wasn't too good either.
I'm still waiting the March snow dumps to save the season, but it's been so friggin' warm. The freezing level is still well above mid-mountain. Looks like it's going to be an early start to spring skiing this year.
Driggs is a cool town. I spent an afternoon at a funky little coffee shop/cafe there one time. My friend and I were broke, had just enough money for gas to get back to WI. Spent about three hours in there reading and sleeping on their couch because we didn't feel like driving yet.

Here's a picture of the "greater" Driggs area. I escaped winters 23 years ago (with the exception of a couple of years of college in Colorado) by moving to Southern California. I like year-round mountain biking and I have no money; otherwise, I'd be interested.
And the urban sprawl...well, it's just heinous. (Actually, that depends on who you ask. We got our first street light two years ago, and people almost came to blows about it...)
It was called the 'Victor Steak Bank". It was in a building that housed the Victor State Bank, some many years ago, so they used the moulding on the edifice to create the new name...unfortunately, it has been through two owners in Ten +/- years ,and is now an upscale home furnishings joint...However, there are still three GREAT joints for steak, The Knotty Pine, The Royal Wolf, and Warbirds Cafe. So no problems on the sizzle front here...
So are you still going to be involved in the local races? Karen and I stopped in During January and we talked a bit (the folks from NJ). I was thinking about a trip out this Aug to ride and try and hit the Big Hole Challlange (I think this was the race). Are you still going to be in the area or moving out. And what is John O going to do with out you there???
Any way it was great meeting you this winter. Perhaps we will bump into each other this summer!
As good as the April trip sounds it just wont work this year. Best of luck with the trip!!!
I had any experience with business ownership. I love the Driggs-Victor-Tetonia area although I've never ridden there. From what I can tell by the new houses going up, my wife (in the mortgage biz) could find work there but I'm not so sure about myself. I had a friend who moved there a few years ago but I lost touch. Any idea if Zeb Sharp is still around? When do you think the trails will dry out this year?
Will be up soon, but currently it is more of a liquidation/sale tool that a snazzy site. It is not a commercial listing, I am advertising in Jackson, though. I haven't heard fro Zeb in a while, i think he is either in Reno or mammoth..Bob, i hope to continue involvement in the races, but for the BHC, I probably need early registrations paid in order to pay the FS fees, ads, placards, etc, but I will try my best to pull it off. Thanks, everyone, keep the comments coming about good ol' Driggs!

having been to driggs (not biking, though) i would jump on a chance to live there.
have your wife get a job, and then just go riding/skiing every day!
give her a foot massage or something.
