what's your favorite time of day to ride?

I used to always ride in the afternoon after getting out of work but since getting older and having a family my favorite time ride is the early morning. I love getting up early (5:30am), putting my gear and bike in the car and hitting the road by around 6. My wife, son and even the dog are still asleep and the house is all quiet. There's little to no traffic on the roads. I'll stop for a cup of coffee on the way to the trails and am usually the only person at the parking lot. The trails are empty with maybe just a dog walker or horse rider out there. I can get a few hours of riding in and the weather is still cool and just warming up. By the time I get home my family is up and I have the rest of the day ahead of me.

Time to get my gear ready for tomorrow.

^^^second that. I see there's a "when do you ride with a family thread" going. I dont have kids and I work a slacker second shift job that pays well enough. I normally ride everyday after I sit around the house doing nothing for a few hours. Normally thats around 9 or 10.

what's your favorite time of day to ride?

I do after work weekday rides with friends and early morning weekend rides by myself. I get the social aspect during the week and the quite mellow mornings on the weekend.

I prefer mornings. While it's no fun being the person who knocks out all the spiderwebs that cross the trail (I've almost wrecked when a spider was dangling from the front of my helmet), it's nice being the only person out on the trails. I like the peace and quiet.

I like riding in the mornings too. Hitting the trail as soon as there is enough light to do it safely. No better way to get the day started.

I try to ride during the warmest part of the day (I live in interior Alaska) so usually sometime around 1-2pm. I'm a grad student so I have some flexibility in the summer, during the fall/spring semesters I ride whenever I have free time and the conditions are suitable.

I like riding during any time of day, but very early mornings are the best. Sunrise and still almost dark in the bottom trails.

After work till dark then get home and sleep. I use to ride mornings, but after a long morning ride the rest of the day would drag.

Road bike, early morning, say 8:30. Mountain bike, late morning. I like get out after it's begun to warm up. I'd rather sweat then freeze.

This year I work deeps, so I get off at 6am, on the trail by 7am usually, which works well for Texas summers and beating the heat. This year it's been around 80 at that time, so it's nice, but warms up quickly. 2nd would be evenings leading in to night rides. Next year, looking to switch to days so I'll have to adjust my riding times, maybe on my off days I can still hit some early morning rides.

Here there early birds get to freeze their asses off in the foggydrizzle many mornings.

My favorite time to ride is afternoon to sunset.

I am NOT a morning person. 5 in the morning is best approached from the OTHER side, dancing.

Really it depends on the season. The hotter it is, the earlier I like to ride...Winter, more towards mid-afternoon to take advantage of the warmest part of the day.

Early morning around 5am has always been my favorite time to ride. The air smells so fresh in the morning and it reminds me of when I was younger and would get up early to go racing with my Dad.

In the cooler weather I'll ride in the early afternoon, after lunch. But now that its hot and humid I ride in the mornings. I usually get to the trail around 9:00 AM. When the weather gets cooler again I'll ride in the early afternoon again.

Early morning is the best. It's quite, with much less traffic on the road or trails. Plus, I love the colors of the sunrise at this time. Either in the sky or the way they enhance the scenery.

Morning is always nice for all the reasons everybody else have mentioned, but I very rarely can manage to get myself out the door in the morning for a ride! It only seems to happen when I arrange to meet someone.

I'm fairly temperature independent when it comes to riding (10F to whatever) and I do most of my riding to/from work. Perfect riding (for me) happens around 0545 (if it's light) as there are no cars to deal with on the road section of my ride, I can see the soft spots on the gravel, it's not buggy yet and let's face it, sunrise is cool.

I am a night owl because I have been on nightshift for over 9 years. I love riding at night. It is a lot of fun exploring areas where I live and just having most of the roads to myself. I also like day riding but I prefer riding at night. It's cooler out (especially in NC) and I am used to riding at night at work. Always important to have a good light system on your bike, extra batteries and visible clothing but I am used to having that on when I ride.

Night riding is probably my favorite. I like the solitude and the focus. I think I ride better and get more out of it(mentally.) If I had to choose between daytime hours it would be within an hour or so after sunrise. The earth waking up is a pleasure to watch and be a part of.

LOL, sort of. I usually work all night 4pm-4am, get home and unwind till 5:30-6am depending on the "unwinding" and then I sleep during the day. I am a "morning" person, just a little earlier in the morning.

It is better now (been on nights for more than 9 years) than when I rotated every two weeks, two weeks nights, two weeks days. I felt like I was going to die every rotation and statistics show people who rotate shifts die much earlier than those who don't. I am pretty used to it now after almost a decade of nights. Some "days" (or nights) are harder than others but that is life.

Prefer early AM, nobody else out on the trails, rest of the day to get stuff done. Unfortunately, work gets in the way most days, so it's usually late afternoon by the time I get to ride and my butt's already draggin'.

i work nights so not a morning person. Honestly though the heat midday lately has been a *****, still prefer mid day especially when its on the hot/humid side. few ppl at best to share with when I want to get out and test new things, work on technique since slim chance of messing up someone elses ride by walking/riding back to try a section again or being stopped to adjust something. Been riding lately at about 85-90 deg with high humidity in wooded trails (midwest). Does wonders for conditioning when carrying a 3L hydropack loaded with the normal extras too.

Now Spring has sprung and summer is on the way, my allergies have started to kick in... so unless I load up on antihistamines etc. I try to avoid early am or dusk riding... worst time for pollens that affect me... before or after lunch are preferred at the mo ^^

    If I'm up before 7am it's because I haven't slept yet.

I'm lucky enough to work from home so lunchtime rides are doable. Nobody on the trails midday except a few nice stay-at-home moms out walking dogs and trail running (in the cutest fitness outfits ever btw), good motivation!

Late afternoon and early evening during summer (the forest seems quieter, trails are not busy and sun is less intense)

I got the cree x2 lights off ebay for 25 shipped and they're great. Also got a ultrafire xml-t6 flash light that's zooms and a handlebar bracket for another 15 with batteries and chargers. Totally worth it. The flash light is great for other uses too.

depends on the time of the year. but in general... the early morning. I like when i'm the first on the trail or path (when road biking). Especially when your coming down and riders are just getting started and you still got the whole day ahead of you. When I get home the family is just finishing breakfast and I'm pumped to start the day. Summer time I do like the dusk time... catch alot of wildlife out and get to tell the kids about them when I get home.

For me I'll take anytime I can get but if you want to pinpoint it I'd say early morning so when I get back I still have a day to do the honey dos and I'm more energized for the day.

Personally I really enjoy the leaving just before sunrise and riding until just before sunset.

anytime I can fit things in, but I love being out early morning on the trails as the mist breaks to the rising sun. on the road it's usually late nights - get the kids to bed and head out. start about 9 or 930, home about midnight or later.

My favorite time of day is early afternoon. However, lately I like getting out early on the weekends so I can finish up with some daylight left during these short days in the winter.

i REALLY wish i could ride in the early morning, but it always seems to upset my stomach to exercise early in the morning. i dont know why that is. because of this, i generally start my rides at about 10 on the weekends. but i ride plenty in the afternoons when i get off work (around 4) on weekdays.

I like morning rides. The light, the sounds and smells, are all unique to that time of day. Problem is, I'm NOT a morning person and have a hard time getting out for morning rides. But they are always rewarding when I push hard to make it happen.

If it's super hot, I like night rides for cooling off. Midday rides are great when it's been cool for awhile and you catch the max heat of the day when it's in that perfect range to feel warm, but not too hot.

Evening rides are nice when you retain the warmth of the day, but you lose the oppressive direct sun. Especially when you get to ride during that short time where you're pushing visibility without lights, and then finish the ride under lights.

Night rides are wicked cool when the snow is falling. Every sound is deadened, except for the faint hiss of the snow itself. Night rides are also key when daytime temps are breaking 100, or even 110+.

Starting into night rides... Getting into winter now, so a little cool out... can't wait until Spring/Summer, can help get kids into bed and then go and hit the trails!!

8:00pm-ish through dusk. Typically only see deer, trail and sunset. Occasionally see a few people wrapping up, but yeah. Peaceful time to ride!

The crack of dawn is my favorite time. I like getting out just as the sun is coming up.

But I'll take whatever I can get - which at this point in my life, is usually the crack of dawn on weekends, and occasionally an afternoon ride during the week.

I prefer early morning, I like to be alone on the trail, people usually start arriving at the trail head when I'm done. And since my wife doesn't mtb, I can go ride bikepaths with her after my ride.

It's light enough to ride by 5:15 am this time of year. 90 minute ride, back home, shower and at the office by 8:00.

I'm usually out at the trails by 8am. I finish my ride at around 11am then grab some lunch before going home. During the Summer, it can get to 80 and 90 degrees at where I ride so its nice to get out when its cool as well.

We do this during the summer on Sundays. It gets hot and humid here so being off the trails by 11 is perfect.

I enjoy riding early in the morning, beautiful weather, fresh air. I want always to watch the sunset, such a panaromic view while having breakfast and then I jump on my bike and let the ride begin *-*
