I used to live in a nasty, roach-infested, ghetto apartment building where the government would house Bosnian refugees. A lot of them came to the States with barely anything. When I moved away, I could only take my most important items that I could fit in my little pickup, so all else went out next to the dumpster. I'd walk out some nice chairs, then go back inside to grab another load and by the time I got back the chairs were gone. I off-loaded a bunch of useful things that day: vacuum cleaner, furniture, t.v., microwave, more. It must've felt like Christmas to those folks.
I used to live in a housing co-op with a bunch of avid dumpster divers. I saw people come home with a working dvd/tv combo, a working Denon receiver, and lots and lots of perfectly good food from restaurants and bakerys. One of my friends actually found a couple bucks in the trash around move-out day in Spring down in Madison. Plus, people would go to the big bike shops in town and bring home busted wheels, warrantee parts and stuff they just threw out. A lot of times it was trash trash, like busted frames (never knew why they would carry thouse home, I remember some type of specialized with busted seatstays kept showing up in our basement, a whole lot of the same frame with the same break) but sometimes it would be a tacoed wheel with some busted spokes but the hub would be ok to use.
We would cruise the trash when all of the rich kids would move out of the apartment ghetto's at the end of the semester...although it was tacky, it was fun, and man did we find great stuff (for us college kids)..TV's, Furniture, appliances, kitchenware, microwaves, blenders, LP albums, turntables, bikes, quite a lot of it in fantastic condition. My best find was about 50 Playboys, mid sixties, perfect condition...
my friend and i are avid dumpster divers we are only 16so why not? lol
Our biggest find was about 90 cans of beer every week. We then ended up selling them to my college neighbor for about 35 bucks every couple weeks.
We would also find tools and other various things like a vcr that worked and a tv that woks
I found a full Thule gutter mount bike rack a while back. It was a bit forlong though, and I already had a yakima. I tried to get rid of it at a garage sale recently, but no takers.
When I was 14 or 15 my friend was small enough to fit into the local magazine drop, so we'd stop by there every now and then for car magazine and, pure gold for a 14-15 year old, PORNOS.
the town i live in has free bi-annual bulk item drop off day at the town sand pits--used to go there when it was done for the day and usually find some desent bike parts--others would come for recyclable stuff or mowers, etc--the town now posts someone there around the clock to prevent picking until its all hauled off on monday---it was sorta fun while it lasted, but i dont miss it.
My dad was the master dump diver. He was always comeing home with some broken stuff from the dump. How embarrassing. It never bothered him though. He loved to fix things and was a child of the depression so very frugal as well. And it's not like we were poor. I mean, he was an eye doctor for crying out loud.
Best finds: A ping pong table and a Gold's gym..... I can just picture him wrestling those things into his truck.
