Yesterday X-FXR kindly dropped me off at Spooner Summit and I headed for Freel Pass with the intention of going down Armstrong. The five mile climb straight from the parking lot with no warm-up was really tough, and I haven't felt the altitude that much in years. But seemingly all of a sudden I reached the top in a reasonable time. The next seven miles on the way to Kingsbury is perhaps my favorite trail and I had pretty good skills. At the end of the trail I removed my pack to make some adjustments and I set my camera on the trail marker post. About five miles later I stopped to take a photo and realized I had left my camera. It would be a long uphill back, my business card with cell phone number was in the camera bag, and I knew the camera wouldn't be there anyway. So nearly all photos are from my cell phone.
I'm calling this ride The Super Punisher+ because I stayed on the Tahoe Rim Trail, rather than taking the pavement between Kingsbury and Heavenly, and I continued on down the famous Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. The massive hike-a-bike, perhaps totalling a full mile, both before and after Star Lake totally sapped my energy and enthusiasm, killed my knees, and reminded me why we called only a 25 mile ride The Punisher. About a half mile of trail toward the top of Toads is serious downhilling, and totally un-ride able for me. But after that I did pretty well. This would be a great ride if it weren't for the massive hike-a-bike sections. As I expected, when I finished I had a phone message regarding my camera and I retrieved it from a hiker who had picked it up.
