    Standing to pedal is FAST!

I am totally a sit and spin kind of rider, and it probably keeps people from getting thrashed, but last week I lowered my saddle for long downhill with some jumps and forgot to zip the pocket that my multi tool goes in, so I had to stand and pedal the rest of the ride, which is mostly rolling flat into downhill. On the flat section of trail I felt like I was coasting most of the way but according to strava I had my best time on that section. . .

Guess that guy from bikejames.com is right. . .guess I need to work on my one legged squats, or maybe just ride my bike standing more often to train my week legs!

Or the lower wind resistance from the lower saddle helped you out.

Out of the saddle is great for control over rough sections but over the long haul takes more energy than pedaling while seated and is therefore slower.

    bikejames......... right ?

Who's talking hate? I'd go for a ride with bjames, if he doesn't lecture me about the evils of clipless I won't make fun of his studly glam shots.

Study glam shots??? I always think he looks like a normal dude in his videos, but I think they put the ugly filter on for his pose shots like the one above.

    Standing to pedal is FAST!

So it took strava to tell you putting more effort into pedaling=faster.
    Revolutionary.

Actually, when i ride my gears to sit and spin, i feel like i'm using more effort than when i stand and mash my SS. Guess which one is faster? It isn't the one that feels like its more effort. Maybe i'm just more adapted to my SS.

Sitting and spinning in a lower gear ratio (front:back) at high cadence is generally thought to work your cardiovascular system more than your leg muscles and joints. Look for example at Lance's changes after treatment (I risk blowing the thread up with this example but I think it's useful).

My knees can't take the pounding so I prefer not to stand, but I definitely post better times when I do stand up.

I find my knees take less of a beating when standing as I can use my body weight to help push rather than relying only on my quads.
