Poker Run scheduled for 6/15/13 @ Fair Hill, MD
Brian Fults' battle with cancer continues.
After the 2011 mountain biking season Brian was diagnosed with stage 4 Squamous Cell Carcinoma Head and Neck cancer. He underwent 8 hours of major surgery to remove the tumor in his throat, the lymph nodes, jugular vein and muscle on the left side of his neck on 11/11/11. He then underwent the most toxic chemo available and 38 days of intense radiation treatments. Starting at 225 pounds, he lost all his taste and the ability to eat, requiring a feeding tube and lost 60 pounds.
After finishing his treatments 2/6/2012 he found out only 50% of the people that start this treatment are able to finish it. Since Brian was in such good shape to begin with and his bulldog tough attitude he was able to withstand one of the harshest cancer treatments. He spent the rest of 2012 getting his blood counts back to normal, his saliva glands working again, getting his taste back and getting back on the bike, getting fit and setting new goals.
Five months after his last treatment Brian was out in Colorado racing in the Leadville Silver Rush 50 miler, in hopes of getting a spot in the Leadville 100. He needed to finish in 8 hours and he crossed the finish line in 6 hours 40 minutes. He won a lottery drawing and he was now on his way to reach his goal by racing the Leadville 100 in 2013. Everything came crashing down when it was discovered his cancer had spread to his lungs. He will be starting chemo next week and again will be fighting for his life. Brians left lung is totally collapsed from 2 tumors the size of golf balls. His goal is to make it to xmas, he says he is "getting his house in order". He is an inspiration to many, he is a bulldog and will put his head down and plow through anything, no matter what the obstacle. Lets help him plow through this obstacle. Please send him well wishes and support.

Poker Run Committee had an organizational meeting last night, attending were leaders from mountain biking community and fellow Trailspinners; Alan Turns, Mark Nickerson, Andrew Bloom, & Scott Roberts. We have a premier event planned again for this year's Poker Run with the traditional pre-ride of the Fair Hill Classic Race course, Poker Run fun & prizes, food court (from Teri's Kitchen again this year), beer tent, Kid's games, ever popular pee-wee bike races, and a Chinese auction. Additionally, we have already received a committment from Weaver Cycle Works for a total custom builtsteel frame; MTB, Road, or CX, which will go up for raffle! Stay tuned for more updates! Also, it appars as though we're a little light on volunteers so if you want to meet new people, have fun, and make a difference in some one's life, this event is for you! You can register to help with the event right here at trailspinners.org under the event page or contact me firstname.lastname@example.org, (M-302-218-1043). We have lots of different tasks that you can help with; set up, arrowing, sweeping, parking, clean up, food court, or the ever popular beer tent servers (sorry guys this position is reserved for our women members). All proceeds from this year's event will benefit the BRIAN FULTS FUND. Brian is one of our fellow MASS racers, who is battling cancer and this fund has been set up to help him and his family cope with his staggering medical costs. Come out and help us make a difference.
