Here's the full recap. Now for a cliff-notes version:
ECEGatorTuto and I headed out to the Picketpost trailhead to ride north. It was about 17 miles of winding, climbing forest road up to the AZT junction near the top of Montana Mtn. Incredible views all along the way. Arturo took a short break while I did a 5 mile RT OnB down to Rogers Trough TH, just so I could ride the full passage north to the wilderness boundary.
Back on top at the AZT singletrack, a wicked fun descent had us in awe of the views & penalty for failure on the switchbacks. The terrain reminded me a lot of southern AZ, the rolling grasslands near Kentucky Camp. The tread of the trail is actually in pretty good order, the catclaw & Russian thistle were out of control!!
BY the time we met up with FR650 it was getting toasty, our water was getting low & hot, so we opted to finish the ride the way we started - FR650. In all, it's a great loop that could use more tires & loppers. I'll be back, perhaps before it cools down just to bag the remaining 10 miles of AZT back to Picketpost.
Here are a few snaps:
Getting set to climb away.
Arturo nearing the high point of the ride, big views to the east.
Turnaround for me.
Enjoying the view.
Keep your eyes on the trail!!
Near the end.
