    RIP, Jack, ?/01 - 5/30/13

Anyone who knows me, or my shop, either virtually, or physically, knew Jack. He passed last night around midnight after a rapid, and unexpected decline from Splenic cancer. Last week, happily running, this week, gone.

Probably the finest example of canine class, ever minted, and I mean that without any hyperbole. Sometimes you run across an animal so special, they defy logic, and that was Jack. He came from our local animal shelter, emaciated, obviously ignored at a minimum, more likely abused to some extent. Good food, lots of love, grooming, and a place to call home, and work, overcame those issues in a few short months.

Calm, steady, ready to go at the drop of a word. First guy to try and worm himself inside your sleeping bag while backpacking, cause hey, he wouldn't want you to get cold or anything. One paw, then a nose, then the head, next paw, you get the idea. However, when a bear wanders through camp, he's the first up and out of the shelter, making sure Mr. Bear gets himself gone, no regard for his own safety, till afterwards, when he shakes for the rest of the night going, holy sh*t, what the hell did I just chase?

Met everybody who walked in with calm, peaceful, caring eyes and body. My wife said he had a cowboy wag, not fast and furious, but slow, and deliberate, like a old hand, finally getting into town after a long ride.

Not one to chase balls, fetch? Screw that, you go get it, you threw it after all! But throw a stick in the water? Game on. Must, clean, ALL sticks from the water, forever. He'd even hide them so you couldn't throw them again, as he went back for one he saw, that you didn't throw.....

Clocked him one time at 23 mph, carried that for almost a mile, and looked beautiful doing it.

He's climbed more peaks, hiked more miles, greeted more customers, friends and family than I can enumerate.

Not one for biking, loved it, but found the deer that dashed off, far more interesting, lost him once due to this, and gave up. True, his only fault, but since he was a dog, I can't honestly even fault him for it, because that deer did look like FUN!

You will be missed in so many ways, I've only begin to feel them, and my tears are making it hard to type anymore, so I'll let the pics do the res of the job.....

Great dog, great love, great life. I lost my favorite dog last fall and think about her every day. The right dog can own a piece of your heart forever.

Sorry to hear about your beloved companion. Sad that man's best friend doesn't live as long as we do as humans.

Wow, what a write up, and I too am sorry for your loss. Sometimes, the loss of a furry friend like this can be harder to deal with than a human relative. Truly, unconditional love with an animal like this. I will hug my boys (Boxers) Walker and Blue tonight and will have a thought of Jack while I do so. Damn, now I am starting to choke up.....time to end this post. Peace.

Sorry about your loss. One of our dogs just passed away also. She got run over by a pickup in our driveway, managed to survive that but couldn't fight off the infection that set in about three weeks later.

Rip jack. Great obit, and deep condolences. Maybe he's in dog heaven now, chasing that stick in the water, sleeping in that sleeping bag that smells like you, waiting for you to come many years from now. Maybe we are all a part of one consciousness. Maybe he's part of you now, looking out at the world through your eyes and silently alerting you to that deer on the left on the 7th mile of your favorite trail. Maybe you'll hear him then, telling you that you could chase that deer. You gave him a great life. Rip jack.

Wow, that was a tough read. Very sad day for sure but what wonderful memories you will have for your lifetime. I worked K9's for six years and have a little bit of an understanding of what it means to spend so much time, both at home and at work, with your dog and then they are gone. Keep in mind he loved every moment with you because you showed him the love that he deserved. I am so sorry for your loss...........
