Do you mean how to save a screenshot of the desktop to a file? The only way I know how to do this is to press (on a PC) Shift-PrtScn, and then use the right mouse to choose Paste (or use Edit |Paste from menu), to insert the picture in a program like Paint (comes with Windows), then save the file as .jpeg or whatever format you want.

The image of the desktop will be stored in a buffer somewhere. You will not see anything visible at this point.
You will see the image after you paste it in program like "Paint" or "Word".

If this does not work for you I don't know what else to tell you.
    Good luck.

    Press PrintScrn all by itself

Then paste into your draw program and edit and crop to suit your taste.
