    Pictures from western NC

Halloween has been high on my list as a great time to take a camping and mountain biking trip to Western North Carolina for a long time. Last year, we had four along for the festivities, which include pumpkin carving, food eating, fun and games, and of course lots of riding.

This ride started off with some downhill to a bridge.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4837.JPG"></img>

    Me likes to wheelie.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4834.JPG"></img>

After this a little climbing on an old forest or logging road.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05607.JPG"></img>

The climbing got steep and rooty. Straight up punch to get up this part.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05608.JPG"></img>

Or a curved line which takes less power but I think is more difficult to negotiate.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05614.JPG"></img>

There were leaves scattered here and there but not so many as to make the riding overly difficult.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05615.JPG"></img>

The single track sections were a lot of fun
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05619.JPG"></img>

And there were plenty of semi-rocky sections but nothing over the top.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05623.JPG"></img>

    Tight steering here.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4840.JPG"></img>

There were more leaves in this area for some reason and they were hiding roots.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05629.JPG"></img>

This section crossed a stream and the stream seemed to want to follow the trail for a piece.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4843.JPG"></img>

A steep roll into what is often a deep mud pit. It sucks to sink deep and endo into the mud, but this time the mud was not a problem.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4848.JPG"></img>

A few logs down is standard for this area, some of the larger ones have been notched (whether we like it or not).
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05626.JPG"></img>

Many miles pass and we got to some sketchy downhill. This is steeper than it looks but if you don't do anything silly and don't chicken out, you'll be fine.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05644.JPG"></img>

Lots of cool down hilling but it's too much fun to ride to bother to take photos of downhills.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSC05649.JPG"></img>

The always agreeable model at her best.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4853.JPG"></img>

A little more wheelie action off a small rock.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4856.JPG"></img>

Near the end a bridge across a scenic river.
    <img src="http://uberfarm.com/mnf/20101029_PNF/DSCF4857.JPG"></img>

I think we're all a little bummed that we neglected to take any pictures of our camp site with our two faced jack 'o lantern. One face was a little artsy face using mainly slits and small holes. I think it had three eyes in a tight cluster on the left face and a single disfigured eye which was split at the corner and had a blood tear drop. The mouth was torn at the corner as if fish hooked. The nose pretty standard. The other side of the jack o' lantern started off just being an air hole so the candle would stay lit. After a bit of thought it morphed into the Jesse Helms jack o' lantern. That probably requires more explanation than I can give right now.

All in all, it was a good trip and I hope to go back this year too. Ride when you can... you can rest when your dead.

    Jack

[QUOTE=spazzy] Might as well sell your bikes, E-riding is much more productive.

It's not too far from Charlotte. I'm thinking 1.5 hours but I didn't check. Just look up Davidson River campground to be sure. You can ride straight out of camp with minimal pavement.

Wow, I thought I was a procrastinator. Thanks for posting up. I'm looking forward to riding in Western NC next week.

    That would be Cove Creek.

Here's some specifics: Pisgah National Forest, Ranger District near Brevard NC. Trails located right across from the Davidson River campground. There are two bike shops (Sycamore Cycles and The Hub) just outside of the forest and they both sell maps. Have fun!
