    Northern Spain

A couple of weeks ago I took a trip with some friends up to the north of Spain. We stayed in a small, and I mean small town north of Burgos. Three days of great riding in the general area and then on the 4th day we drove a little further north east to do a MTB Marathon. Here are some pics of the first three days. Sorry no pics of the Marathon.

    Beautiful..

Spain? Looks a bit like Arizona. The whole world is perfect for this biking. Maybe mountain bikers will take over and rule the WORLD!
And now I'm off to ride my little part of the globe.
Thanks for posting the pics of your great ride!

Hi Gregg, yeah it definitely reminded me of the southwest U.S. The last day however, when we went further northeast was very different with green tall mountains. It was a great trip. Glad you enjoyed the pics.

    Ah Espana!

I went to school there for 10 months. I love that country so much. I bought a BMX and it got jacked like 5 days later. Oh well. I want to go back and mtb. I did hike and camp in the north as well. I will have to get my map and journal to remember the name of the town and trail.

Did you guys go with guides or read up and explore?
How do you afford your rock n roll bike style...

I have a friend here who runs a psuedo MTB guide company and he is originally from Burgos. So this past spring while visiting his folks he started checking out some of the riding up there and tried to organize 2 guided trips. We were sort of the guinea pig group but it was a complete blast. Check out his web page at www.surmtb.com.

Those are some great pictures. I'm thinking about getting a job in northern Spain later this year. Looks like I'll have to look at the maps to work out exactly where Burgos is.

Another guy posted some beautiful shots from Cantabria but he said it was mostly fireroad with little singletrack. Your pictures look like they must have been some distance from there.

    Cheers,

    Duncan

    Hey Duncan,
Glad you like the pics. They were taken north of Burgos on the way to Santander. Good luck with getting a job. Unless you have an EU passport or some other "in", they make it really freaking hard to get a work permit in Spain and I imagine the rest of Europe these days. If you know any tricks, let me know!

I've got dual citizenship (New Zealand/British) with an EU passport. A major priority in choosing where I live is the accessability to good biking, and your photos have given me a great idea of what I might see in Spain.

    Cheers,

    Santander

I spent a memorable summer in Santander and would highly recommend checking it out. I did some hiking and backbacking while there and, looking back, think there would be some awesome mountain biking opportunities. The mountains are steep, green, lush and full of ancient paths and roadways. Unfortunately for me, my visit was just before mountain biking was invented.

I`m from the North of Spain, Asturias.
We`ve got one of the best trails in Spain, gonna put you some photos.
More or less, the lnandscapes here are similar to north-pacific coast in the US.
In the south, the trails are awesome too.
The canarias islands are another paradise for MTB.
in summary, we´ve got a fantastic place to ride in almost every part of spain.
Enjoy and hope to see you riding here.
PS If you want some information, send me a private Messasge or an Email.
    Bye!

His name is Victor and he rides a Giant MCM carbon hardtail. I don't know his last name, but I do know he and his wife own their own business. They do acupunture and chiropractic/massage and natural medicine stuff.

I know him because he is a good friend of my friend ircbike who lives in Lebrija. I lived in Lebrija for a while, and if all goes right I'll be back there in a couple of months.

I´ve seen him at least once riding around my neighbourhood! (Not many MCMs here) But I don´t know him.

I´ll be glad to ride with you all if you come here. If I see that giant I´ll tell him about this. I can´t believe it. You have ridden with someone from my small town. What a small world we ride!

Indeed it is my friend. A very, very small world. Actually, I sort of own the Merlin Ti that Quique(?) had in his shop in Dos Hermanas for quite some time. Do you go to his shop at all?

Very nice trails at the north of Spain. Tomorrow I will post some photos from trails here at the south of Spain.

    wow!

You got the merlin!! Quique is my most common bike mechanic, that merlin was from Santi, another rider here that helps me in a race this sunday when I got chain sucked (we couldn´t repair the mess so I mus visit quique this week again :|) The shop is called 26"

Incredible man, unbelievable, here in a foreign forum from the other side of the world I find one of the best known bikes in my town. No one would believe me. The previous owner of the Merlin is a well known racer so many people here have seen your frame winning races, man, that frame knows how to go fast.

Santi actually rides a Specialized S works Ht M5, and one of the first klein attitude he uses for road training

we definitively have to meet some time

Not at all surprising considering the fantastic photos that have been posted here. Man, I am really keen to try out living and biking in Spain. Some of the lusher parts actually look quite a bit like New Zealand.

    Good job! Espania!

I must go. I've always wanted to, just for the usual reasons: great people, cities, culture, food etc. But now... THE RIDING!

Awesome thread. Thanks for sharing all the great pictures!

... and if we just ... Spain in another time

I lived in Spain for one year in 1976-77 in the Val d'Aran and worked at a ski area there called La Tuca. Because of what I was doing, teaching hang-gliding, I was able to travel all over Spain and even to the Canary Islands to compete in hang-gliding competitions.

I loved my year in Spain and when I became fluent in the language, I loved it even more because, even though you can find the same scenery and terrain in many other places in the world, you could never find such friendly, warm, and welcoming people like the Spanish.

    Viva la gente!
The reason dogs have so many friends is that they wag their tail instead of their tongues.

Well, a little later than I had been planning but I am finally off to the north of spain for a month of camping, cycle touring and off roading. I'll be on my rigid Kona so will have resist getting too carried away with the rockier, more isolated trails. Are there any good bike shops in Oviedo? I'll be based nearby for a couple of weeks.

    Cheers,

    Duncan

I used to live in Torrejon de Ardoz. Does anybody know it. It's about 40 minutes outside Madrid, near Alcala. Anyway, I miss the rode riding en Espana. By the way, if you've never been to Spain, the woman are drop dead gorgeous!
