    NorCal Forest maps

Question for anyone who knows: What's the best source for maps of the National Forest land West and North of Tahoe (Tahoe NF, Plumas, et. al)? I'm planning a week of riding there for the summer, and while I may not always know where I am, I plan not to be completely lost. I assume the forest service maps are good maps, but do they show trails? If I bring a GPS hand-held, will I need to know where the trails are? Blah-blah-blah.

    Thanks,
    --Kevin

forest maps are not always reliable wrt singletrack type trails, but with a gps and a decent map you should be ok. the popular trails around downieville are all marked on the plumas nat'l forest recreation map (or something like that) readily available at bike shops and ranger stations in that area. there's one for the south yuba area too (nevada city up to the sierra crest).

I don't know about the "best source", but our club has a collection of links to area maps here:
