This is a good shot of how the trail is cut into the side of the mountain. It was built as an access road in WWII, and has just recently been reopened as a trail last years for hiking/cycling.

Finally, we've entered a traffic free zone and shortly onto the dirt roadbed, leaving the town of Riva behind:

Climbing is gradual, even though the switchbacks look intimidating.
