hello, my name is garboui and i am a bike aholic and...
...ive been riding deprived for the last month and a feel an onset of BRWS (bike riding withdrawl syndrome). sure i went for a crcazy cold ride last monday and went to rays myb on dec 20th but i just cant seem to get my fix in. is anyone else having this problem or should i just and the letter "e" to my condition and then i will have some brews instead.
normally i would still be out riding but the weather cant make up its mind weather it wants to be above or below freezing making the trails really shitty esp with freexing rain. i also dont have enough bordom to upll out the rollers. what shoud i do? i thought about road riding but the roads are just too messy and salty. ive almost bought another bike just to mask the pain of not riding but i know it will only make it worse when i realize i would add another to the collection only not to be ridden.
Yeah I'm sick of seeing all these posts about guys going riding in 35 degrees and some rain. I'd love to have those kind of conditions right now. I'd have to be frickin nuts to go riding here in WI at the moment. It's gotten down to 20 below some mornings, and every surface is covered in ice from the freezing rain we had two days ago. The only outdoor activity worth doing right now is ice fishing, even the xc skiing would suck balls. I hate this half-ass winter ****. I either want nice snow for snowboarding, or straight up cozy biking weather, ie: more than 40 degrees and dry. Oh well, I guess I'll go burn some more fossil fuels to warm things up a bit.
why not get some rain gear and studded tires and putz around on your mtb for awhile? you know, hit the "urban singletrack" better than a trainer / rollers / nothing.
but yeah, this weather is quite odd. and it's supposed to be like this for at least another week. bah!
with temps in the upper 60s for the last week i've managed to OD on riding with more than 200 miles combined between road, mtb, and ss riding. i think i got all of my winter training in in a single week!
The weather here has been unseasonably warm but I had a pretty bad crash 3 weeks ago and have not been able to ride since then (wrist and elbow problems). It has been driving me crazy...I want to ride - major case of BRWS!
Same here in Tennessee. Averaging mid 60's recently. However, we have had so much precipitation that hitting the trail is impossible. The local trails are extremely wet. Very frustrating when it's this warm and you can't ride.

Well, I'm glad you're getting out and digging it, anyway. Do you feel that way in the dog days of summer, tho?
I was just thinking how incredible winter riding is when there's rock hard snow: you don't overheat, the trails are REALLY fast, the rooty & gnarly trails are smoothed over like buff CO singletrack, and there's hardly anyone out there.
When the skiing sux, the riding is generally excellent. I can live with that.
Hey I'm in the same boat, had snow for awhile and the skiing was mediocre, then came rain mud and ice so now skiing sucks aswell as riding, I'm going to go mental if this weather dosen't make up it's mind

this is not the norm for us and i think it has gone to my head. just wait a week or two and we'll be back into the rain & 40s and miserable riding conditions.

We may not have epic thousand mile climbs and descents, but I love being able to ride all year. Even during windy days, we have the trees to shelter us. My November and December monthly mileage averages were higher than any other month in '04. I've ridden in sub-40 degree temperatures only twice this season so far. This week's lows are in the 60's, highs in the 70's.
No, I'm not rubbing it in to our ice encrusted brothers and sisters up north (well, maybe a little bit!). They get the last laugh during summer, when I have to sweat my azz off in extreme humidity soaked 90-100 degree days.
I'm riding after work today in the local park's singletrack, which is only closed after a heavy rain. I still have a lot of fitness to gain in time for the NORBA nat's in March.

You and I both know that it doesn't rain every day! And as far as temps in the 40's being miserable, I consider that to be great MTNBiking weather. A long sleeve jersey with a layer under it, and a pair of legwarmers with my wool socks, and I am golden. We might start seeing some of that in LATE March. Oh the sacrifices we make to protect the free world!
Maybe I will be brave enough to take the SS out to the local trails before the spring thaw. Until then though, it's either gerbil racing, frozen farm roads, or frigid road rides. Last winter I went out on a road ride that started at just above 20, and ended in the single digits riding into a 15mph headwind. Every part of me was COLD and it took awhile to warm up.

it depends on how much humidity you have going with those 40* temps as to whether it's good riding weather or not - 40* and 70% humidity makes it dank enough to send even the hard core inside to the trainer. on the other hand, it's better riding weather than anything i had at this time of year when i lived in either Wisconsin or Montreal.
road ride in 20*?! not a chance! anything below 28* and i'm staying in bed.
As far as road riding in 20 degree weather, you have to remember that it is almost 30 degrees warmer than the high here today! As MB1 on the Roadbike forums always says, "There is no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothes."
No doubt, I'd love just cold weather and some rain. Everything here is under AT LEAST 3 feet of snow. I've been hitting the weights like a madman instead. Stiff legged deads + squats = too tired to think about riding.
Oh yeah, and lots of sex helps keep your mind off riding as well.

As for all the posts about studded tires...I don't have any> Suppose you can make them pretty easily though with tacks and tape. Somebody else said something about hitting the weights, which I have. Leg extensions and presses work wonders for biking. Oh, and lots of sex DOES help pass the time.
