    Fort Collins / Picnic Rock Fire update....

    Send some rain. Quick.

    The Picnic Rock Fire in Poudre Canyon exploded overnight to 1,800 acres, officials said this morning. A Type II team has taken over management of the fire, which is moving north and is now within 1-1/2 miles of the Bonner Peak subdivision. Residents of the 80 homes in the subdivison were notified by phone at 5:30 a.m. to be on alert for possible evaucation.

    No containment estimate was available this morning.

    An estimated 100 to 120 firefighters will work the fire today. Two large air tankers, two helicopters and 1 heavy helicopter are expected to join the effort. A heavy helicopter can carry 1,000 gallons of water, while the smaller helicopters carry 250 gallons.

    Its going to be a BAD fire year around these parts. Dryest March on record since 1911.
