I was anticipating a really tough ride in two days so I decided to ride a trail I was very familiar with, and to take it easy. So I did an out and back on the Black Canyon Trail south from Black Canyon City. It was overcast most of the ride and that kept the temperatures comfortable until the sun came out toward the end of the ride. The trail was awash in more wildflowers than I have ever seen on any ride. So despite not having the best camera for the job, and my hands shaking uncontrollably, I stopped quite a bit on the return and attempted to get some plant photos.
On the way out I happened to meet three riders moving a Gila Monster off the trail and I thought that was by far the coolest thing I'd ever seen on the trail. I wish I had taken more time to get better photos, but I didn't want to disturb it too much. I felt like I could ride all day but, wanting to save myself for the big upcoming ride, I turned around and headed back after about 16.5 miles. My GPS battery went dead about a half mile from the finish, and although I started my backup GPS, I did not bother merging the two tracks. These are about the size of a dime.
