bike storage rack: freestanding with 2 levels - DIY or suggestions?

I know that there are zillions of good threads of bike storage with perspective to streamlining the layout of the garage, etc.... I am looking at possibly doing away with my wall hooks and either building or purchasing a tiered rack. I know a mtbr'er had posted a pic years ago of one that was made of wood (I searched and searched... and...) and couldn't find it. From the retail side, is there anything else out there that's close to the SARIS offerings? Has anyone welded or bolted something together with steel? I was thinking of using bed rails for the wheel trays or maybe large diameter PVC pipe cut down the middle...

similar to this but in a DIY fashion.... maybe...

Does anyone have any pics or insight to share on this?

    Thank you,
    Andrew.

I have two like this. You can move the rubber coated arms up and down to fit the bike. They are free standing but does include straps as a safety measure.
