3 weekends in a row, 3 black bear encounters

I seem to be on a roll, 3 weekends, 3 encounters. Pretty cool.

All of the encounters where in the Coeur d alene national forest in north idaho. Bears are common, with most hunting units allowing 2 bears per year.

1st: cruising down the carlin creek side of trail 257 come around the corner doing about 15 and see momma bear 10 paces away, i gave out a yell, that suprised me. The momma took off downhill, i than realized one of the cubs was in a tree just above me and back 3 feet, the other cub was just in front of me and starting to climb a tree, i could have swatted the cub out of the tree when i went past it at shoulder level. I remeber thinking what long claws the cub has. I kept going and though how cool was that.

2nd encounter was the next weekend, i took off from the house and climbed up to my elk hunting area, going down the gated road, i spotted a bear about 60 yards out, it was running away from me, cinnamon color bear.

3rd encounter was on trail 56 in the middle of nowhere in the cda national forest, i was sidehilling on the trail and a bear about 30 yards away, stepped on to the trail. I gave out a yell and it took off down the trail. I came around a bend and saw the bear leave the trail about 50 yards down. I picked up the paced and came in hot and yelling loud, basically charged it. The bear took off running. I was basically trying to scare if of humans. A trick I got taught in northern bc.

pretty cool. North idaho definatly does not have any shortage of predators.

Exciting riding; always an interesting to be reminded of where you are in the food chain!
Do you have griz in that area?

I haven't seen any on the trails in Alaska. I think they are a myth.

No bears lately, but I did see a turtle the other day. It did not attack.

we have grizzlies, black bears, mountain lions, wolfs and coyotes and no national parks, just national forest. All 5 main predators are doing just fine.

actually these where just black bears, so no **** scared out of me.

however in 1994 on the stuihawk river in Alaska, I was bluff charged by a momma grizz and her cubs. I remember thinking the cubs are bigger than any bear I ever saw in Idaho. I pissed right after the incident.

A couple of years ago, I had 8 bear encounters in 2 months. One of them was almost a collision as the big guy was snoozing in the trail around a sharp curve. In the same season I ran into a big cat as well.

Yesterday I went riding at the place where I had all the bear encounters a couple of years ago. It was my first time back there in a bout a year. I was privileged that it happened again. A full size black bear and a cub no more than 15 feet away when I rounded a bend. They jumped off the trail, but not far enough that I felt they were scared of me so I trucked on by. If only I had taken the GOPro.
