Less then a year ego I started reading this forum. I did not have lots of money and I did not know if I would actually stick to this. So I went on craigslist and purchased a 2001 trek 4300 for $160. Guy even delivered it to my house. After reading many posts not to waist my money and dont upgrade anything on the bike, I was a bit discouraged. So I just changes the basics: Brake pads, tires, handlebar grips, seat and all of the cables. Maybe an extra $100 all together.
My first real mountain biking trip me and my girl friend drove from Florida (where I live) to Brown County State Park Indiana. The sky's were dark and forecast predicted rain for rest of the day. We drove too far to not just go. So we went for it! Few hours later it started to pour, the ground was already soft from rain lat night. This is the first time in years where I have felt a live. In fact the closest feeling I had compared to this was working in a correction facility as a guard (jail).
I fell in love with mountain biking from this moment on.
When we got back to home to Florida I caught the bug. The UPGRADE BUG. Despite every ones advice not to spend any money on this bike, I did anyway.
My first inspiration was reading the "Raw aluminum" post. So I tripped the ugly red color from my bike. As of right now I'd say its 95% done. I have few small things I'd like to upgrade later.
Bike currently stands at 25.5lb (not sure what it was before but it had to be well over 30lb)
1x7 drive train with disk brake on front and v brake in rear.
In the end I could not have been any happier with all of the upgrades. It feels like a $1000 bike. Not to mention doing almost all of the work my self felt grate! [My friend did help me with some of the things Thanks Alex... ]
